Led by Nikhil Yerawadekar (Antibalas, Akoya Afrobeat, Low Mentality), LIVING LANGUAGE pays homage to Fela Kuti and his Afrobeat concept in a nimble, soulful jazz format. The band’s sound features undeniable grooves and powerful melodies to motivate the people. Other musicians in the project bring their experience working with icons such as Lee “Scratch” Perry, Charles Bradley, and Vieux Farka Toure to help create this new perspective in Afrobeat.

On top of spending years in projects like Antibalas and Akoya Afrobeat, bandleader / guitarist NIKHIL YERAWADEKAR has recorded music with Tony Allen (legendary drummer and co-creator of the style), performed at the New Afrika Shrine in Lagos, and organized massive Felabration birthday concerts in NYC from 2016-2019. In all this time, Nikhil’s fascination with Fela Kuti’s legacy has only grown, as has the importance of transmitting his uplifting, anticolonial message with new music.
