🥁DOGO DU TOGO 🔥 ALAGAA BEAT 🔥 // SATURDAY JUNE 6 at Rhoneymeade Arboretum @rhoneymeade ✨ 🎶 After two decades in the US fronting the successful Afro-pop band Elikeh, bandleader Massama Dogo @dogodutogo yearned to release music inspired by his home country of Togo. Now splitting time between Washington, DC and Lomé, he created a brand new sound: the alagaa beat. 🌍 Alagaa combines iconic rhythms of the Ewe, Mina, Ga, and Kabye people (kamou, kpanlogo, kinka, bobobo) through a complex interplay between drum kit and rhythm guitar. A distinctive double snare hit meets a guitar part based on the traditional gankogui bell pattern. Alagaa means “trance” in Ewe. “If you don’t get in a trance,” says Dogo, “then something’s wrong with you!” The melodies are anchored in Togo’s cultural history, using unique pentatonic scales from the music of Vodún religion and traditions that permeate everyday life. 🔥 The alagaa beat brings the energy right away. 🎨 JANE HARGRAVE 🔥 CRAFT & ECOLOGY 🔥 // RHONEYMEADE WEEKEND 🌳 Jane Hargrave @janehargrave is an artist and writer raised at the edge of the woods in Central Pennsylvania 🌲 exploring natural and built ecosystems through fiber and wood. Merging personal memory, research, and dream scenarios, her stories and installations occupy the shifting boundaries between natural and man-made worlds. Her drawings and sculptures feature repeating decorative motifs that create intricately adorned objects: artifacts of an invented history. The word motif comes from Latin “movere,” meaning to move. Jane has long been attracted to repetitive mark-making, finding meditation and metaphor in the rhythms of gardening, dancing, cooking, and printmaking. These same instincts flow through her practice. Last year’s festival sparked something: a community weaving sculpture that brought us all together, thread by thread, creating something larger than ourselves. 🧶 This year’s display builds on that beautiful collaboration. 🎻MEHRNAM RASTEGARI 🔥 PERSIAN PSYCH VISIONARY 🔥 // SATURDAY JUNE 6 at Rhoneymeade Arboretum @rhoneymeade ✨ 🎶✨ Mehrnam Rastegari @mehrnam_rastegari is a NYC-based master Kamancheh player, singer, and award-winning composer who threads Persian microtonal tradition through rock, psych, and contemporary styles. Her sound pushes Persian music into bold, modern directions. Featured at GlobalFest 🌍 WOMEX, Pitchfork, and Le Guess Who?, she’s collaborated with Jon Batiste and composed scores for award-winning films. Her 2025 album “Dislocated Pulse” fuses electrified Kamancheh with heavy grooves and restless microtonal motifs. Known as “el heredero de la cumbia” (the heir to cumbia), Landero delivers exhilarating, high-energy performances that fuse tradition with contemporary power, bringing Colombian soul music to new audiences around the world with authenticity and unmistakable charisma. 💃 🇨🇴 Hailing from San Jacinto in Colombia’s Montes de María province — the birthplace of cumbia sabanera — Yeison is the grandson of the legendary Andrés Landero, widely revered across Latin America as “el rey de la cumbia.” Andrés Landero helped shape what the world now recognizes as cumbia, translating the indigenous melodies of the gaita flutes into accordion lines, driving them with African-derived percussion, and giving voice to the lives of rural Indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities. Under his grandfather’s guidance, Yeison began studying accordion at the age of seven, inheriting not only a musical legacy but a cultural mission. @nevarisproject is a band from NYC led by percussionist Agustín Nevaris, who relocated to State College in 2021. The band brings funk, dub, and Afro-Latin grooves to the stage, with former Fela Kuti drummer @mrjojokuo behind the kit, alongside breakbeat specialist Lockatron. Agustin Nevaris provides vocals, congas, and keys, pulling from a catalog of four studio albums, including 2023’s “Reverberations,” produced by Bill Laswell and described by Carlos Santana as “supreme creativity”. Joining them on May 22nd at Manny’s is grammy nominated bassist Josh Werner (Lee Perry, Matisyahu, James Brandon Trio), and grammy nominated multi-instrumentalist Peter Apfelbaum (Hieroglyphics, Phish, Don Cherry), and guitarist Matt Dickey. There’s a deep sense of wanderlust baked into every groove — part spaghetti western, part Peruvian psych — with twangy guitars that slither like snakes through a desert bazaar. New Orleans-based Brian Gitkin is a Grammy-nominated artist and producer known for his work with Cedric Burnside, Bernard Purdie, and Cyril Neville, and as the mastermind behind Pimps of Joytime. It’s all FREE. This street closure os part of East End Social, a fresh vision that will transform this block into a seasonal pocket park designed for connection, creativity and activity. From mid-May through early August, and hosted by @downtownstatecollege this space will host pop-ups and community driven experiences that bring new life to downtown, and the Fest is part of it! From 1:00-5:00 pm on @mannysstatecollege Stage, experience bold sounds and some favorites with DM Lane, Doo Crowder, Juan Castrillón, Moon Dog, and Amok OK. Then at 5:15 pm, the energy shifts to Secret Planet Hiester Street Festival East End Social, where Paolo Angeli’s @paoloangeliofficial experimental soundscapes collide with Los Cumpleaños’ psych-synth futurism @los_cumpleanos and Loboko’s @loboko_music Congolese dance alchemy. 🎶 💃 We’ll all be dancing! Her lens-based practice examines the transformative power of scale and light, drawing from cosmology, deep space imagery, and western mystery traditions. 📸 Using manipulations of the photographic process including modified lenses, specialty filters, and double exposure, she creates images that exist parallel to but do not overlap with objective reality. Her work invites you into spaces that feel both familiar and otherworldly. Solo projects have appeared at 707 Gallery, Silver Eye Center for Photography, and Bunker Projects in Pittsburgh. Nationally, her photographs have been featured at Paradice Palace in Brooklyn, Aggregate Space in Oakland, and Art Ark Gallery in San Jose.
