Last night was one for the books!!!
I had a wonderful time spinning Haitian music with my
@zonalibredjs partner
@modrums.music as part of
@paulbeaubrun ’s magical show at
@bam_brooklyn
My discovery of Haitian music has been as an outsider, not guided by Haitians. But Haitian music has captivated me for over fifteen years and has brought me immense joy.
Last night was the first time I played a mostly Haitian set to a largely Haitian crowd. None of my sets are ever planned, they are always improvised. But, to make it more interesting, last night modrums and I also decided to go “ones” (i.e., we played one song each the entire night). Going ones with another DJ is not easy, if you are not in tune with each other it can often sound disjointed, as each DJ has their own idea of where to take things. But modrums is the perfect complement behind the decks: he is a voracious digger with great instincts and stellar technique. And we have a compatibility that has been strengthened by years of working and growing together. So despite the fact that I didn’t know most of the songs he played (I put my shazam to good use😄), our set felt coherent, varied and tasteful. The reaction we felt from many Haitians last night validated a labor of immense love and admiration.
And, of course,
@paulbeaubrun was amazing. It is the second time I DJ an event with Paul (the first being at the lovely Wild Birds, which we miss so much!). Paul, Dadi, Daden, and Morgan transported, entranced, and elevated all of us.
Thank you
@liacamille @bam_brooklyn and thanks to all of my friends and family who were there with me (and
@chekerero for being the best PR I could wish for😄🫶🏽)
And an enormous thank you to my talented wife
@carlaeyeball for these beautiful photographs!
