“Value of Design: Creating Agency Through Data-Driven Insights” 북토크에 많은 분들이 참석해 주셔서 인상 깊었습니다. MIT의 동료들이자 이책의 저자이신 강민구선생님과 @mkangk , 상해뉴욕대학교 헬레나 교수님을 @helenaarong 서울에서 만날 수 있어 반가웠습니다..! 이날 학부, 석사, 박사 과정의 조경, 건축, 도시 등 다양한 분야와 학교의 학생들이 함께해 주어 더욱 뜻깊은 자리가 되었습니다. 이번 책을 통해 다시 한 번 분명해진 것은 우리가 오래전부터 마주해왔지만 여전히 명확히 답하지 못한 질문입니다. 거의 모든 것이 AI와 데이터 기반 의사결정으로 이동하고 있는 이 시점에서, 우리는 아직도 ‘디자인의 가치’가 무엇인지 분명하게 이해하지 못하고 있다는 점입니다. 수백 년 동안 공간을 설계하고, 건설하고, 판매하고, 임대해 왔음에도 불구하고, 왜 특정한 디자인 행위가 중요한지, 그리고 그 가치를 어떻게 이해하거나 평가해야 하는지에 대해서는 여전히 명확한 답을 갖고 있지 않습니다. 이 책이 제시하는 뉴욕시를 대상으로 한 연구는 직관에 의존하기보다 실증적 방법을 통해 이 질문에 접근하려는 의미 있는 시도로 보입니다. 또 하나의 중요한 시사점은 도시설계 연구의 방향성에 관한 것입니다. 많은 ‘도시’연구가 도시사회학이나 사회과학적 접근에 기울어 있으며, 공간 자체보다는 사람, 행태, 제도에 초점을 맞추는 경향이 있습니다. 이는 비판의 대상이라기보다는 시대의 흐름이며, 모두 중요한 연구들입니다. 다만 앞으로는 공간과 어반니즘 그 자체에 보다 직접적으로 집중하고, 공간이 사회와 생태 전반에 어떤 의미를 갖는지를 탐구하고 싶다는 생각이 더욱 분명해졌습니다. 끝으로 바쁜 일정에도 불구하고 참석해 주신 모든 분들께 감사드립니다. 행사를 준비해 준 권혜인 조교님, 당일 전반을 차분하게 코디해 준 이다은석사생, 그리고 행사의 인상을 잘 담아낸 멋진 포스터를 만들어 준 박시현석사생에게도 감사의 마음을 전합니다. 덕분에 의미 있는 자리가 될 수 있었습니다..! 항상 멋진 자리를 제공해 주시는 도만사 @domansa_ 조영하 대표님과 @praud_official 임동우교수님께도 감사의 말씀을 올리면서 2026년에 재미있는 도시를 상상해 볼 수 있는 한해를 만들어 보겠습니다..! @snu.usdl @usdl.superforms
