We are thrilled to announce that award-winning artist Matthew Rosier and leading socially engaged public art organisation @upprojects will be bringing a major new artwork to Barnet this year! Large-scale projection, oral histories, nature recordings, an original score, and community participation will all be part of this highly ambitious artwork that explores Barnet’s role as a place of arrival and a home. The artwork, Ascendance, will be unveiled in November 2026, during a free multi-day arts and culture festival forming the celebratory finale of the Light + Flight programme. “As an artist drawn to how places and people came to be, it’s so exciting to be creating an artwork that will make this visible. Barnet to me represents what I love about my home city: the multitudes of stories, journeys and landscapes that somehow hold each other together. This is what we will come together to celebrate in Ascendance.” – @mfprosier Sign up to our Arts & Culture newsletter to stay updated on all things Ascendance and upcoming opportunities to get involved. 🔗 in our bio. #LightAndFlight #ArtInBarnet #CreativeCommunities Light + Flight is presented by Art in Barnet. Berwick has hosted parades for centuries — military, civic, ceremonial. 𝘽𝙚𝙧𝙬𝙞𝙘𝙠 𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙙𝙚 draws on those histories, shifting the focus from authority to everyday presence and collective creativity.

Almost a year later, here’s the film of Berwick Parade. With public art there’s always a question of how much you let go of knowing the outcome, this project was a big experiment in that. Together with an amazing team, we set up a (sort of) simple structure: everyone was filmed in the same way and projected at a large scale, with live music. What the 850 participants brought to it — their fearlessness, humour, rhythm, creativity — was beyond anything we could have planned. Without that, there would’ve been no project. When the work was shown, some people told me it wasn’t normal for so many people to participate in something like this in Berwick. That surprised me, because it felt entirely normal given my experience of the town. But if it isn’t, then I guess that’s why public art exists. I’m excited to keep exploring this idea in other places — large video portraits of people moving through the buildings they encounter every day. Huge thanks to my incredible collaborators: choreographer @chloesayersartist and videographer @coalfield_studios . To @maltingsberwick @berwickshines for your trust and support and to the most amazing production team @l_velvick @cloudsartist @nickyredhair @heroic_hoodini @_georgiacurry0 and Caitlin Davidson. The musicians, particularly Sam Lord and the Melrose Pipe Band. And of course, to everyone in Berwick-upon-Tweed who took part.

This morning I was reading an article about how we are at a turning point with social media, where everyone agrees something is wrong, even while participating (the irony of my posting this here is not lost on me). Then I remembered short film I’d made (with my silly voice) which is probably the most honest thing I’ve ever made. It was a rip on a film about the social lift of real town squares made in the 1960s by socialist William Whyte. I made this during Covid, with too much time on my hands, and a feeling that something was crystallising with social media. Since 2014 I’d tried to create work that used technology to create moments of connection and coming together in real life. As I still do. My naive response to the enormity of a wholesale move of life online. A belief that these moments of coming together can somehow counteract the dopamine driven attention economy unleashed upon us. A nativity I’ll hold onto my whole life, I hope. Social media gotten so much worse since I made this that it’s created an ambivalence, a sense of powerlessness, so different to those heady Covid times. I hope the article I read this morning is on to something, that we’ve reached a digital saturation point, But in the meantime, here’s to keeping it real ✌🏻 Music by the brilliant @martino.g of @parachutewords
