We are so excited to celebrate The Streamliner Diner as a recipient of our Excellence in Preservation Award! The Streamliner Diner, located at 120 W Henry Street, is a rare example of a Worcester Streamliner Diner car. It was originally manufactured in 1938 and later relocated to Savannah, where it became a distinctive architectural landmark and community gathering place. With its characteristic Art Moderne style, curved stainless-steel exterior, mahogany booths, and marble counters, the diner represents a unique chapter in Savannah’s cultural and architectural history. After a devastating fire in February 2025 threatened its future, a dedicated team came together to restore this special place. The smokehouse was reconstructed to match the original configuration with improved structural performance. The Streamliner also underwent a full interior restoration with modernized life-safety, mechanical, and electrical systems. The most challenging aspect of the project was the roof reconstruction which required specialized craftsmanship, custom metal bending, and close coordination between trades. The Streamliner Diner Rehabilitation transformed a catastrophic loss into an opportunity to safeguard a beloved historic structure. Through skilled craftsmanship, adaptive problem-solving, and adherence to preservation standards, the project restored the diner’s character, improved safety and functionality, and ensured its continued role as a vibrant part of Savannah’s historic landscape for generations to come. Congratulations to the team, Lynch Associates Architects, JTVS Builders, Tharpe Engineering Group, Method Engineering, and SCAD for their outstanding work in preserving this unique landmark! #HSFAwards #StreamlinerDiner #SavannahGA #HistoricPreservation #PreservationMatters #Landmark #MyHSF

We are honored to celebrate 7 West Bay Street, home of Savannah Culinary Institute, as a recipient of our Excellence in Preservation Award this year! 7 West Bay Street is located in Savannah’s Historic Landmark District and was constructed in 1856 out of brick and timber framing. Fun fact, it once housed the Savannah Republican newspaper! The building is typical of Savannah’s historic commercial buildings that front Bay Street. In the Late 20th century, the building was used as several nightlife entertainment venues. The property was purchased in 2018 by the Savannah Technical College Foundation for the college’s Culinary Arts Program. Through careful masonry repair, structural stabilization, storefront and window restoration, and removal of historically inappropriate materials, this building has been thoughtfully restored and transformed into a vibrant working culinary institute that serves as a hands-on learning environment, equipped with teaching kitchens, classrooms, faculty offices, a café, a bar, a full service restaurant, and a demonstration kitchen. This project shows that historic buildings can be equipped for modern uses that suit the needs of our community today. Congratulations to the dedicated teams, Hansen Architects, The Pinyan Company, Tharpe Engineering, and Method Engineering Group, who made this award winning preservation possible! #myHSF #HSFAwards #HistoricPreservation #SavannahGA #PreservationMonth #historicrestoration

“There are two things that make a room timeless: a sense of history and a piece of the future.” – Charlotte Moss The renovation of Hanak Hall reflects a careful balance between preservation and modern transformation. Originally constructed in 1872 as a four-story brick townhouse for William H. Baker, the building later served as home to the Georgia Medical Society for over a century. Today, the 11,000 SF structure serves as executive offices for the Savannah College of Art and Design. Original Italianate details remain intact throughout, including the decorative bracketed eave, cast iron window hoods, and the original fireplaces that now anchor the renovated interiors. The William Baker House has been listed as a contributing building within the Downtown Savannah Historic District since 1979. A resilient comeback for a Savannah landmark. We’re excited to see the final photos of Streamliner following the 2025 fire now beautifully renovated and opening soon. As part of the renovation and reconstruction efforts, all original wood elements at the "smoke shack" were severely damaged by the fire. We worked with SCAD's design team to replicate the previous design, including the design and detailing of the timber structure and new foundation elements to support it. It’s always meaningful to be part of projects that restore and strengthen spaces so important to our community. We can't wait to get our Strangebird on soon!

We are excited to post the final photos of the completed renovation of Streamliner/Strangebird Diner after the 2025 fire. The project required complete demolition of the smokehouse, full interior rebuilds, major system upgrades, and a complex roofline redesign featuring a custom standing-seam metal roof. This Savannah landmark will soon be open once again. We were proud to be a part of bringing her back to life again and look forward to enjoying this gem again soon.
