Virtual production is transforming film and TV — and Charlotte is stepping into the future with the opening of
@MAYAVPStudios , the city’s first full-service LED virtual production studio.
Founded by Filipino-American videographer
@EricHalili (Rebrand Group), MAYA VP is a 4,000-square-foot facility in Charlotte equipped with LED volumes — massive digital panels that create lifelike environments in real time. The technology eliminates the need for green screens and extensive post-production, cutting both time and costs for commercials, films, video games, and even high-budget music videos.
Halili, who moved from the Bay Area to Charlotte in 2007, was inspired by 'The Mandalorian,' one of the first shows to fully embrace virtual production. With a background in computer science, he saw it as the next frontier — especially in an era of AI-generated content.
After fortuitously connecting with friends from 'The Mandalorian' production, Halili gained the confidence and expertise to launch MAYA VP. He secured funding through the Beyond Open Grant and Creative Spaces Initiative Grant — thanks to its location in one of Charlotte’s Corridors of Opportunity — as well as an SBA loan to finance the build-out. Since September, he has been working extensively to open the new studio.
Education will also be central to MAYA VP’s mission, as Halili plans to host regular workshops to grow the industry in the city and state. MAYA VP won’t just be a rental space — it will be a creative hub. The team recently brought a mobile LED setup to the American Athletic Conference’s Media Day in Charlotte and they plan to collaborate with regional filmmakers and producers.
Halili sees MAYA VP as a catalyst to reignite Charlotte’s filmmaking potential. “This is my passion, but it comes with responsibility,” he said. “If we share this technology, we can unlock so much creativity.”
The grand opening is Friday, August 1, featuring a ribbon-cutting with the
@CarolinasAsianChamber , along with live demos, drinks by Justin Hazleton (Lorem Ipsum), wine by Joshua Villapando (Assorted Table Wine Shoppe), hors d’oeuvres by Saku, beer from Sugar Creek, and music by DJ That Guy Smitty.
