Long Read 🚨
As a child, I knew what I wanted.
I wanted to act.
I wanted to write films.
I wanted to tell stories.
So against my parents’ wishes, I chose Theatre Arts.
But after gaining admission, I was rejected by the department and moved to Music.
I remember not even knowing how to call my dad to explain it. In a family where many would have preferred I studied Law, how was I supposed to say that after fighting for Theatre Arts, I had now been moved to Music?
Not long after, I was moved again — this time to Mass Communication.
I spent about five years there, hoping at least that road would lead somewhere.
Then, almost at graduation, the department lost its accreditation.
It was devastating.
Some classmates dropped out.
Some moved on.
Some got married.
Life happened.
But somehow, after all the twists and delays, I was moved back to the very department I first gained admission into and was rejected from:
Theatre Arts, University of Calabar.
Only this time, I had to start from 300 level second semester while taking all the courses from year one to final year within the space of one year.
It was brutal.
There were days we slept in school, woke up in school, brushed in school, and kept reading. I carried my toothbrush, toothpaste, face towel, and extra clothes in my bag because survival became part of the routine.
It was one of the hardest seasons of my life.
But today, I am grateful.
Because after every delay, every redirection, and every disappointment, I still found my way back to the thing I loved first.
And today, against all odds, I am proud to call myself a Thespian.
