‘At Source’ (LY009) by Caterina Barbieri and Bendik Giske is out today! “Caterina Barbieri & Bendik Giske’s At Source resounds music as wellspring, that which is essential and unknowable, and yet utterly primary. It finds two acclaimed composer-musicians building a world together in self-contained collaboration between analogue synthesis and an extended approach to the saxophone that conjures its own universe of sound. It is at once intimate and cosmic, drawing on the challenges and possibilities of their artistic exchange, tearing down technique to access all the expansive possibilities of their sonic meeting point.” 🔗 Order the vinyl and the CD at the link in bio. All tracks composed, produced and mixed by Caterina Barbieri @cat_barbieri and Bendik Giske @bendikgiske Additional mixing by James Ginzburg @jamesginzburg Mastered by Andreas [LUPO] Lubich at Loop-O Mastering Photography by Igor Pjörrt @pjorrt Graphic Design by Nicola Tirabasso @visio____ Special thanks to Jan Vorisek @v0r1sickn3ss

Friday, December 12 • Giorno Poetry Systems, NY • Georg Gatsas - The Process: Book Launch + Eric Copeland + Geologist + Vorhees In the immediate aftermath of September 11, Swiss artist Georg Gatsas @georggatsas moved to New York City. The Process brings together his early photographic work, capturing the city’s underground music and art scenes between 2002 and 2007. To celebrate the release of The Process, Georg has asked three of his favorite performers, Eric Copeland @esl__books Geologist @geobriensystem and Vorhees @vorheesmusic — people whose work he first encountered in the years of the book — to play solo sets. His friend Ethan Swan @ethanswan tells his story: “He’d met Ira Cohen at a lecture in St. Gallen the year prior and formed a connection so immediate that the poet offered the use of his couch for as long as Georg liked. But the city that Georg found was not the city of that invitation—people were suspicious, bunkered, craving comfort and avoiding implications. Most of them were, anyway. There were others who saw this desolation as an opportunity. They held shows in abandoned buildings, commandeered the empty bars, made work that cut, crashed, and overwhelmed. Georg followed the threads of this other New York, taking photographs all the time. Some of his pictures were of the haunted, empty streets. Or the abandoned objects, shuttered buildings, wild cats. The heaps of trash that were the only signal that someone must be alive in those buildings. But mostly he took pictures of the people making this other world. Genesis P-Orridge and Kembra Pfahler and Stephonik Youth. Artists and musicians and weirdoes. Black Dice. Animal Collective. Gang Gang Dance. Assembling the book raised a lot of questions for Georg about those years, and just as many about the present day. What has changed in the last twenty years? What habits persist? Where are the gaps now and how can they be weaponized?” — Ethan Swan This event is made possible with the friendly support of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation and the Consulate General of Switzerland in New York.

Georg Gatsas - ‘The Process’ (LY008) We’re excited to share that The Process, the first book from light-years, will be released on September 17. It brings together Swiss artist Georg Gatsas’s early photographic work, documenting New York’s underground music and art scenes between 2002 and 2007. Alongside the large format reproductions of photographs, the book presents a vast collection of record covers, garments, correspondence, and ephemera from Georg’s personal archive. “It’s an alienating span of time, bookended by September 11 on one side and the emergence of the smartphone on the other. The terrified, reactionary America of these five years craved comfort and safety, but a spiky, risky underground coalesced in that creative dead zone. In Georg’s words, “There was a sense of most of the world not understanding. And this is an opportunity.” The predominant culture’s patriotism and assuredness left a lot of unsupervised space for individuals interested in addressing fear and danger. It sometimes felt as if entire city blocks had been abandoned, the remnants corrupted and rebuilt by bands and artists, by concerts and exhibitions with small, dedicated audiences. This was the terrain of The Process.” 144 Pages, 561 four-color process printing plates, 22.5 x 31,0 cm, with an Essay by Ethan Swan @ethanswan Limited edition to 500 copies. The Process is dedicated to the fond memory of Ira Cohen. Pre-order the book at the link in bio.
