As the evening sky slowly blanketed The Hague, visitors began gathering around Amare, where the opening concert brought swells of serene and stunning music – truly setting the stage for the weekend to come. The programme began with the world premiere of Caterina Barbieri & ONCEIM, where the beloved Italian composer and artist’s vivid modular synthesis had new life breathed into it through the stirring timbres and orchestral ingenuity of @onceim_paris – the Orchestra of New Musical Creation, Experimentation, and Improvisation. After a short break, @cat_barbieri returned to the stage with some guest musicians and with accompanying visuals from @mfo.light.space to delve deeper into her deeply intuitive synth compositions.⁠ ⁠ Photos by @alexheuvink

Rewire 2026 opens on Thursday 9 April at Amare, where artist and composer Caterina Barbieri presents two premieres of new music. First, she performs in collaboration with ONCEIM. Then she presents another premiere of new music as a solo artist, showcasing her vivid modular synthesis and expanded electro-acoustic formats, accompanied by guest musicians and visuals by MFO. ⁠ ⁠ Focussing around generative techniques and the creative potential of computation, Italian composer @cat_barbieri has long channeled her curiosity into a cosmic mosaic of works touching on themes of memory, time, and perception. Through vivid modular synthesis and expanded electro-acoustic formats, she examines states of trance and altered consciousness. 'Patterns of Consciousness' (2017) was Barbieri's breakthrough album, which introduced a larger audience to her alchemical approach to synthesis and composition. On her last album, 'Myuthafoo' (2023), cavernous analogue synth soundscapes ring out with brilliant sustain that evaporates into the air. Before that, 'Spirit Exit' (2022) offered an icy synth opus of compositions whose arpeggiated melodies were as complex as they were catchy. Barbieri's approach to music is surely theoretically grounded, yet her manifold compositions and works are also deeply intuitive. She treats her compositions as living organisms which are developed and altered through live performance.⁠ ⁠ Witness how they come to life at Rewire 2026's opening evening when Barbieri presents new music alongside guest musicians and with light design by visual artist Marcel Weber aka MFO. @mfo.light.space creates A/V performances and installations using light, video, and scenography, and has worked with the likes of aya, Lyra Pramuk, and Tim Hecker. Deep dive into exciting visual worlds of Marcel Weber, alias MFO, who will accompany @aya_yco on lights & atmo next Tuesday, 10.3, in the whirlwind performance in @_archaplus_ 🌪️ Started out as a VJ for electronic music in the early 2000s, he currently narrates spaces, creates sensations, and works in light, video and scenography. This is Sala d'Armi G1 at Venice @labiennale Musica 2025. In the slides nights by @lorenzo_senni , @_darest and @lucyrailton . This space expressd the idea of La Stella Dentro probably the best. Rays from outter space, a prismatic spell, in a landscape of persian carpets - it evoked a cosmic yet intimate atmosphere. It was another great teamwork that made the dream work with @rubenspini , Caterina Barbieri @cat_barbieri and everyone from the @labiennale team. I've worked towards an almost gothic ritualistic feel of the venue and an other-worldly ceremonial experience of the music. This was the fantastic night of Mabe Fratti @mabefs and Asa Chung @junray_official at Teatro Piccolo, Venice's @labiennale Musica 2025. I'm particularily happy about the warm, analogue feel of these classic gobo projections and how well they blend with Mabe's music. The interplay of curtains and creamy shapes works well too i think. Many thanks to @rubenspini , who supported and collaborated with me for these concerts and concept specifically. I had the great honour to be invited to create the light and set design for Venice's @labiennale Musica 2025. It was the first edition under new curation by artistic powerhouse and fellow collaborator Caterina Barbieri @cat_barbieri and a great collective experience cherishing what connects us as humans in these difficult days. I designed for 7 venues, a 14 days program, and worked directly with 36 artists on their respective shows.
