Woah, pretty crazy we’ve been in Detroit for a year now. So thankful to be part of the creative community here.
For anyone new to my work—hey, this is me. I am a furniture designer whose practice is grounded in architectural methods, the built environment and exploration. I’m excited to keep exploring my own practice here and collaborating with new folks along the way.
Been thinking about a new piece of furniture? Let’s chat.

Excited to share the latest pieces I’ve been working on and to be part of @wanteddesign at @icff_official this year.
Also I’m stoked to be nominated for the 2024 NYCxDesign awards for the Made in the Boroughs category. Thanks @nycxdesign and @interiordesignmag
An ode to Pluto, the Nonus Collection is an exploration of the unique characteristics of the former ninth planet’s journey around our sun. Drawing inspiration from the eccentric orbit path of Pluto and the asymmetric center of mass shared with its largest moon, each piece of this collection strikes a dynamic balance within their minimal geometries.
The Nonus Side Table plays with the geometric nature of planetary orbit paths. At the heart of its design lies a 17-degree sliced plane intersecting an elliptical top surface, a visual representation of the unique tilt of Pluto’s elliptical orbit path relative to the plane of our solar system. Crafted from steel and finished with a blackened patina, the Nonus Side Table evokes the depths of the cosmos.
The Nonus Wall Light draws on the gravitational dance shared between Pluto and its largest moon, Charon. Two circular geometries—one solid, one outlined—intersect to create an asymmetric balance of weight. A hand bent neon light casts a soft glow, mimicking Pluto’s atmospheric aura.

Opening Today! One Night Stand: What We Bring to Bed, presented by the American Design Club @americandesignclub during NYCxDESIGN @nycxdesign
As boundaries between work and life have blurred, our furniture now takes on an added role to perform beyond their original intentions. The Tilt Table is a response to a side table’s performative need, offering a way to flip the switch and enter a new mindset.
A minimally designed side table with geometric cuts carved into its boxy form where through the physical act of tilting your furniture, you’re able to unlock a new function, elevating your ritual.

Ode to Pluto.
Kahen Design is a Brooklyn-born, Detroit-based practice founded by Ryan Kahen, grounded in architectural methods and the exploration of materiality. Simple, beautiful, and intentional — furniture and objects designed for daily use and quiet display.
At Afternoon Light, Ryan debuts the Nonus Collection of lighting and furniture: an exploration of Pluto’s eccentric orbit, its asymmetric relationship with its moon Charon, and the dynamic balance found within minimal geometries. Steel, aluminum, blackened patina, single lines of light that blend minimalism with utility.

So grateful for this feature in @detroitdesignmagazine winter ‘25 issue.
Thank you @christine_hope_hildebrand for taking the time to get to know me and my work, and for this lovely write-up.
It was fun to reflect on my journey as a maker and I’m thrilled to be part of Detroit’s creative community. Can’t wait to share more with you, Detroit.
Big shoutout to @dextebro for always being so supportive and for making this a reality.
Introducing the latest piece of the collection, the Nonus Coffee Table.
The Nonus Coffee Table explores the orbital relationship between Pluto and Charon, where its two core elements—the top surface and base—balance around an off-center barycenter. With a play of dualities, a blackened steel base supports a cantilevered aluminum surface, creating an asymmetrically arranged yet balanced composition.

Rooted in one simple gesture, the Twist Bottle Opener is a minimal statement piece for your home bar. Its twisted form provides both a satisfying grip and a sculptural presence that elevates the act of opening, turning an everyday motion into a tactile experience.
Just as cutlery and glassware shape our experience of a meal, the Twist Bottle Opener enhances the ritual of drinking. Its form refines a familiar motion, turning the simple act of opening a bottle into an inviting moment—one that signals the first step in enjoying a drink together.

The Lee Coffee Table showcases a floating walnut table top nestled atop its robust yet softly sculpted wooden frame. Guided by the principle of form following function, the structural framework continuously traces around while seamlessly integrating a lower shelf.
