On Friday, 150+ Philadelphians representing over a dozen local organizations rallied outside the Philly office of Sen. Fetterman and demanded he listen to his constituents who overwhelmingly oppose the the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran. We showed up en masse to remind him that his actions don’t go unchallenged. Shame on Fetterman! Philly Says: No to War, Abolish ICE, Free Palestine! @jvp_philly @cairphilly @familiesforceasefirephilly @rabbis4ceasefire @climbersforpalestine.philly Tikkun Olam Chavurah, @asianamericansunited @onepennsylvania @apipennsylvania @peoplestech_ @phillydsa @mennoniteaction_sepa

“Philly Jews Say Free Palestine! Go Phils!” @jvp_philly calls for end to Israel’s genocide of Palestinians at @phillies Jewish Heritage Night. We are proudly Jewish, and our Jewish heritage is grounded in the belief that each life is precious, that every person is a universe, and that as Jews we are obligated to protect and save lives. Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in Gaza goes against everything that Judaism is about. Never Again means Never Again for Anyone! Go Phils! Fuck ICE! Free Palestine!

Our lone Democratic Senator John Fetterman has once again joined the Republican party in supporting disastrous forever wars in Iran, Lebanon and Gaza. The cost of housing, utilities and groceries for my constituents continues to go through the roof. As we fight for the future of this country, and an end to the genocide in Gaza, we must ask Senator Fetterman — which side are you on?

On the 78th anniversary of Palestinian expulsion from their lands, known as Nakba Remembrance Day, @jvp_philly and @cairphilly are outside Sen. Fetterman’s office—again! Fetterman is one of the biggest opposition to Palestinian freedom in Congress, and it’s time he starts listening to his constituents.  We’re here with progressive elected officials demanding that Fetterman vote to divest from war in Iran, Lebanon, and Palestine, and invest in communities across Philadelphia and Pennsylvania. Two days ago, Fetterman cast the deciding vote against the Senate’s attempt to curb Trump’s war powers, for the seventh time. Most Pennsylvanians oppose the war on Iran. Fetterman needs to answer the phone, listen to his constituents, and start acting for justice!   We thank the elected officials who joined us today @nicorourkephl @ruephilacouncil @senatorsaval @repkrajewski photos by @rayephoto

The JVP-Philly Book Club meets every other month! If you’re interested in joining email: [email protected] “The problem is, if you want to humanize the Palestinian, you have to defang the Palestinian.” Mohammed El-Kurd writes in Perfect Victims: A Politics of Appeal. El-Kurd outlines how Palestinians are made to earn their humanity, to perform as perfect victims, “We are not human, automatically, by virtue of being human–we are to be humanized by virtue of our proximity to innocence: whiteness, civility, wealth, compromise, collaboration, nonalignment, nonviolence, helplessness, futurelessness.” A JVP-Philly Book Club member reflects, “The book supported me to reflect more consciously on rhetorical devices used within arguments around Palestine and how they reflect where the public’s values and perspective lie–whether in emphasizing use of tax dollar spending among Americans; the tendency to use ‘mothers and children’ to emphasize the genocidal injustices; or upholding Palestinian voices that align more with a perception of civility–there is an offensive absurdity in needing to use these at all to support Palestinian lives.” Next up: Fire in Every Direction by Tareq Baconi

Divest from War, Invest in PA! Join @jvp_philly and @cairphilly on May 15 at 10am at Sen. Fetterman’s Office, (200 Chestnut St). We will be coming back with our big red phone and this time we’ll be joined by progressive elected officials* representing Philadelphia to demand that Senator Fetterman divest from war in Iran, Lebanon, and Palestine and invest in our communities across Philadelphia and Pennsylvania. Since February 28, the US has spent over $25 billion on an immoral and illegal war on Iran and Lebanon while Pennsylvanians struggle to put food on the table, schools are closing, and people do not have the basic necessities to survive. Join us to demand: Fund Our Communities, Not Bombs! *@nicorourkephl @ruephilacouncil @senatorsaval , @reprabb @repkrajewski @malcolmkenyatta and more to confirm

The Development Corporation of Israel targets Israel Bonds to larger institutions–like states, municipalities, and union pension funds–in order to generate more capital for the Israeli military and government’s violence against Palestinians. They’ve even lobbied US state governments to change their laws to permit this type of foreign investment. Sales of Israel Bonds serve as an unregulated slush fund, ensuring that the Israeli government can continue to pay for its ever-expanding bombing campaigns and military tech/weapons infrastructure that kill and tear apart families–from Lebanon, to Gaza, to Iran. While many know that the US sends billions each year to support Israeli violence against Palestinians, few know that additional billions in direct, unrestricted funding to the Israeli military and government comes from institutions much closer to home: our local and state governments, unions, pension funds, universities, and other institutions are directly supporting the Israeli military and state by investing billions in Israel Bonds. These bonds effectively serve as a “blank check”” or “slush fund” that can be used to pay for bombs and weapons, or used to offset the cost of the occupation, genocide and maintaining an apartheid system. On top of that, Israel Bonds are not a good investment. They provide a low rate of return and, unlike other assets, cannot be sold on the market. In the 1950’s, Israel Bonds were sold to American Jewish communities as a way to build support for the Israeli government and to direct attention away from the violent displacement and erasure of Palestinian communities. Israel Bonds are direct, unrestricted loans from individuals and institutions–including city, county, and state governments–to the Israeli military and government. Today Israel Bonds continue to fund the Israeli government’s campaign of displacement, ethnic cleansing, and genocide in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
