Iāve said it before, and Iāll say it again ā this series means more to me than almost anything Iāve ever worked on.
-
This latest episode dives into an incredible project by Michael Kaiser and Tom Doak at Rodeo Dunes, and itās everything this series stands for ā adventure and golf.
-
Set in the heart of Colorado, it captures that cold-blooded (in the most lighthearted way) American spirit ā the victory of perseverance, passion, and possibility.
-
As someone who loves the game, getting to work as the colorist on stories like this is the perfect collision of all my favorite things. My job is to help bring these images to life ā to do justice to the story, the light, and the people behind it.
-
I hope youāll take a few minutes to watch it. The linkās in my bio. šļøā³ļøšŗšø

Iāve been shooting a lot of videos in the air lately and a LOT more to come.

Organization has to be on point or I miss shots. THANK YOU TILTA for solving this problem for me.
-
I used to number my batteries and throw them in the bag and do my best to remember which ones were charged and which ones were dead (or partly dead).
-
NO MORE. Every battery in one place. I know the battery life on all of them. And I can charge them all at once (or individually because did I mention you can charge each battery directly via USB-C?)
-
Never going back.

how do you make sure the grade works across multiple shots? 3 MASSIVE tips:
-
1) donāt use the clip node tree for building your look.
use the group post clip or timeline node tree for your look nodes. this is where the look DNA should live.
the clip node tree should be reserved for corrections and windows.
-
2) donāt build a look based on one shot alone.
when building that look in the group or timeline node tree, be sure to constantly bounce around and test the look on multiple shots.
something doesnāt look right? go back, find the adjustment that causes the issue, and find a cleaner way to recreate the desireable outcomes.
-
3) use big paintbrushes instead of small ones.
avoid pulling keys, especially at the group or timeline level. use broad-stroke tools like primaries, log wheels, offset, RGB curves, and film luts.
be careful where you get your luts from though. treat your image with respect, and only use quality luts from trusted brands. you can also use some excellent 3rd party plugins or DCTLās to build your looks (this is where the real magic is unlocked)

took a little birthday flight with my copilot @fly.by.matt and decided to bring the camera.

when I got home I figured I would experiment with some HDR settings for Instagram (which Iāve never done).
-
originally I graded this for ST2084, which I later found out is NOT accepted by Instagram but it looks SO GOOD on the iPhone.
-
once I realized it had to be rendered in HLG for Instagram to consider it HDR, I made a few small tweaks but didnāt get it to match the ST2084 version (partly due to frustration lol).
-
Iāll consider this experiment a learning lesson and an opportunity for me to practice accepting āgood enoughā sometimes.
-
what do you think about HDR reels?

since picking up the fx3 Iāve been on the hunt for the very best NDās I could find.
-
as a colorist, Iām super picky about color shift and IR pollution. either of these are an absolute no-go for me because I need colors to match between the fx3 and the fx6.
-
ultimately Iāve decided on the FireCrest NDās from @kondorblue .
-
sharp, clean, reliable filtration. there is ZERO additional matching required to get the colors to match between cameras, even when using the built-in ND on the fx6. [also the build quality is incredible]
-
super stoked to have these in the arsenal. any tests you want to see??

first commercial shoot with the fx6 as the A Cam⦠hereās what I lovedā¦
-
internal ND is always such a huge advantage for working quick, and makes a big difference on a 2 man shoot like this. skeleton crew ftw.
-
autofocus: āwhy do you need AF? isnāt it supposed to be a cinema camera?ā⦠yes but when youāre running it solo, AF is your best friend. that said, I still shoot with my cine lenses all the time and manual focus is no problem. but there were several times on this day that it came in clutch. particularly on the shot pushing in rapidly to subject. trying to rack focus while executing that move is pretty tough without a dedicated focus puller.
-
codec: Iām very pleased with the XAVC I codec. plays back wonderfully and it colors beautifully. I donāt feel like I have to play it safe in the grade. the file sizes are larger but thatās a price im happy to pay. so get yourself some quality storage solutions and get after it. my preference is always @angelbirdmedia

Iāll be sharing more thoughts very soon on the YouTube āļø

shot some test footage tonight for a v2 powergrade Iām working on.
-
the last powergrade I released was great but there are SO many improvements that have been made and features added to Resolve that allow for much better native film emulation.
-
all of these clips are straight out of camera and the only adjustments made are the blanket powergrade across all the clips.
-
Iāll be sharing more updates in the future.
-
also, this was shot on @sonycine FX6 on the 24-105 f/4 (currently for sale).
-
let me know if you would be interested in having this footage available for download/testing.
*brain dump*: I was going thru the archives today and I came across some old clips.
-
originally, i was hunting for something in particular and after checking 2 old hard drives prior to this one it occurred to me just how much footage Iāve shot through the years. Iām glad Iāve started posting more of my work from behind the camera, as that was where it all started for me, before transitioning primarily to color.
-
itās totally fine for your role to change over the years. it may just take a while to find what best suits you (and ideally what you love most).
-
just be patient. be kind. experiment. and connect with as many fellow creators as you possibly can. this journey is a lot more fun if you do it with cool people by your side.
