I’ve probably caught 4-5 George Leach shows over the years, always outdoors. This indoor, intimate set was really different and was worth a tired Friday. The Fox is an amazing live music venue and a great choice by @vim.house and Rob Thompson (curator/organizer and sick bassist). Special thanks to Jenni for the invite.

Have you heard about Mike Billy Sr.’s digital series that is comming soon on @telus @storyhive ? Featuring interview and stories from elders and contemporary paddlers, talking racing, carving and all things canoes. It’s called Canoe Stories and we’re excited for it. Special thanks to @i.r.evan for the music. Evan has been a great supporter and collaborator on several projects now, from capturing studio sessions to mixing audio. Produced by @jsdyson #indigenous #canoe #culture #dugout

I was really fortunate to get to interview a canoe maker and then see the launch. This 6 man cedar strip canoe is a new style of building when western red cedar logs aren’t available and keep clubs and paddlers on the water. Thanks Devin Paul for sharing the story and congratulations to the Terry Lee Canoe Club. Thank you for letting me fly my drone!

Have you caught a @crystalshawanda show? I was lucky enough to see her and her band/fam play last summer at @burnaby_bluesroots . Her show has powerful vocals and epic guitar riffs but it’s the family connection that takes it to another level. From their daughter needing a daddy kiss mid-riff to those husband/wife magic moments catching each others eyes, the joy was just radiating and it shone through. Later that summer I got to see @jbthefirstlady perform, also with her unbelievably talented son, and she spoke about how Crystal had been her inspiration to get into music. Wouldn’t it be great to have them at the same show some time? CC @canoecultures

Over the years I’ve volunteered with a few of the umbrella societies under @disabilityfoundation and most recently that was for @vamsociety . The 2024 Strong Sessions was held at the Roundhouse Community Centre and was a great evening of music. Featuring performances by @s.maccormac @rachaelransommusic @kristinashelden Simon Paradis and many others. I particularly liked this venue that let the audience and photo and video folks get really close to the performers.

It was so cool to be able to photograph @dearrouge for a SECOND time, this time in @cityofburnaby for their 2024 Canada Day celebration. Drew and Danielle put it all out there on stage and I had some idea of what to expect, but the magic of live music is that no show is ever alike. I don’t follow awards shows much but I’m unsurprised that they are Juno award winners (like I wasn’t surprised to learn @georgeleachmusic is too). To me the important part is continuing to make music and play live when they can. If you haven’t had the pleasure to see them live in Vancouver you can catch them at the @greycupfestival on Nov 15. #concertphotography #livemusic

You’ve probably heard @tanika_charles ’ voice before as she got her start vocally backing Bedouin Soundclash, Johnny Reid, Serena Ryder and more. Now an artist on her own stage, I was lucky enough to catch her show (through my lens) at the @cityofburnaby 2024 Canada Day festival. She brought a great band including @aanderson_guitarist , @jimtonerpercussion , @jeanseledoujet on bass, and a great keys player in @jonnytobinmusic .

It was pretty exciting to hear that @dragonboatbc was bringing @heyoceanband to the 2024 Concord Pacific Dragon Boat festival. Hey Ocean had been blowing up since the early 2000s and then they stopped in 2017: the multitalented artists had other careers (Ashley Ball is a major My Little Pony voice), but then…magic. They reformed and are playing again, much to the joy of their fans and those about to discover them. Don’t miss out if you see them playing near you - a real treat to hear live. #livusicphotography #concertphotography #vancouverlivemusic

Coming out of UBC (at least lead singer Lian did), @tigerreally (think Tiger Lily but you’ve had one too many) doesn’t appear like a homework distraction. Calling their style ā€œjazzy emoā€ sort of hits. The soft, sadder stuff anyways. All the lyrics are angsty-sad which def hits the ā€œemoā€ part and their first album is called ā€œFundamentally Unloveableā€ which also suits. But they can really ramp out of that sad funk into high energy and high flying performance that worried me about on-stage collisions. But they persevered and did not crash (nor burn). They have played lots of local shows like the Biltmore and kicked off this summer with Canada Day for @cityofburnaby followed by @khatsahlano . I’d love to see them play the outdoor series at Victory Square or a Music Waste gig. Keep your eyes out for this great little band or…make a request for them to play somewhere and then go see them. It really can work that way. #livemusicphotography #concertphotography #vancouvermusic

For the 2nd year in a row I had the pleasure of catching an outdoor @ricecake.events show in False Creek at the @concordpacific @dragonboatbc festival. With dj @me.bellasie pumping the crowd and the performers giving their all, paddlers and fans got an incredible show. This festival offers so much cultural variety and I sometimes wonder if everyone gets just how all-encompassing this Vancouver institution has become. If you get a chance to catch a Rice Cake event, don’t hesitate.

When you chance upon @blondediamondmusic , take a moment and lean in to see what’s happening here with this Vancouver-born band that knows how to get a crowd going. Lead by frontwoman Alexis Young who brings high energy and unique hairstyling products to the stage (gotta see their stories to get that one), it’s a great 4 piece band that kicks out catchy retro-vibe tunes that will be going places. With tracks already used in some Netflix series, keep an eye out for their super catchy jam about getting high in the summer that will absolutely be scooped for a teen heartbreak streaming drama at some point. If you are smart you’ll catch them at @fiveacrecoevents with ā€œthe other blondeā€ from BC we all love, @yukonblonde , and that pretty epic @pmcband who played the same day as Blonde Diamond in Vancouver last month. #livemusicphotography #concertphotography #livemusicphotographer #canadianmusic
