What could pluralism sound like?
Come and be part of our CapU Choirs concert on Saturday, April 11 to find out.
We ask the question of how we might listen differently as a result of a santoor from Iran, tablas from India, and Vivaldi from Italy, in the same breath.
We ask what it would sound like to ground our spirits in nature and the wind through an Indigenous work, Yôtin, by Sherryl Sewepagaham juxtaposed with Romantic music by Schumann on poetry by Elizabeth Kulman about spring, youth and the beauty of the nightingale's song.
We ask what it would sound like for a Gujarati Garba to interact with the Hindustani jazz and tablas.
We ask how music from Eastern Canada bidding a lamenting farewell can be heard next to Gimikwenden Ina, an Indigenous song by Corey Payette that calls forth the voice of the ancestors in an act of agency and reclamation.
We ask what it might sound like for these sounds to be in conversation with popular music like Eilish's What Was I Made For and the famous Stairway to Heaven.
With audience sing alongs, we blur the line between listeners and singers asking, "Now that we are in the same room, what will we make together for a better future for all?"
If we can listen differently and breathe together in harmony, could we perhaps learn to humbly fine tune our hearts and find new ways to work towards what we are for and not who we are against.
This will be a super cool concert where choral music becomes the bridge for living conversation.
Especially in these turbulent times, we look forward to dwelling in this living conversation with you.
