Volunteer Spotlight: Anna Bosgra Anna is this year’s DIGA Volunteer of the Year and recipient of the George Shipley Award. She’s been part of both DIGA and BCMOS programs, spending time in the garden and out on the water. Originally introduced to the Disability Foundation through a friend, she saw volunteering as a way to give back while gaining experience toward her future. She’ll be starting nursing school this fall. “At the DIGA garden we were able to grow a flourishing jalapeño plant. A week after we harvested it one of the gardeners came back with jalapeño cheddar scones and shared them with the group, which was such a rewarding way to enjoy the garden.” — Anna “I honestly wish I had known about the Disability Foundation years ago… volunteering with BCMOS was a great way to enjoy something I hadn’t done in years. DIGA taught me lots about gardening and I hope to keep volunteering.” Thank you, Anna, for being part of the community. #NVW2026 #ignitevolunteerism #nationalvolunteerweek

Dennis is our 2025 Volunteer of the Year for the Central Region and a volunteer with the Ottawa Chapter. He spent over 300 hours working on a handcycle modification project, using CAD and 3D printing to design parts that would improve precision and allow the gears to fit together properly. One of the main challenges was replacing the original bushings with proper bearings. The project took longer than planned, but as Dennis shared: “The project took a lot longer than planned, but for me it was worth it, as I could see from my visits that the client was looking forward to it and now enjoys using it immensely.” “These projects that I work on are important to me as they allow me to use my engineering skills to help others. And I love a challenge.” Thank you, Dennis, for your dedication and commitment to Tetra. #NVW2026 #IgniteVolunteerism #TetraSociety

💚 Volunteer Spotlight: Jasper Mansfield Jasper will be this year’s Volunteer of the Year Award Recipient for BCMOS Kayaking. In her first year with BCMOS, she has already contributed over 50 hours across kayaking, paddleboarding, hiking, and cycling programs. For Jasper, volunteering is about the people and the experience: “Every time I leave a shift, I have a smile on my face. I’ve learned something new, and I’ve worked with an incredible person.” Thank you, Jasper, for everything you bring to the BCMOS community. National Volunteer Week 2026 is here. From April 19 to 25, we’re taking time to recognize the people who support our programs and make this work possible. This year’s theme, Ignite Volunteerism, highlights how volunteering continues to shape communities across Canada. At the Disability Foundation and our societies, we see that impact every day through the time, skills, and care our volunteers bring. Whether it’s building assistive devices, supporting adaptive programs, or helping behind the scenes, each contribution makes a real difference. Thank you to all our volunteers for everything you do. Over the coming week, we’ll be sharing a few volunteer stories from across our organizations. #NVW2026 #IgniteVolunteerism

We'll be at Abilities Expo on June 8 at Vancouver's Roundhouse Community Centre and would love to see you there! Abilities Expo is a free community event connecting people with disabilities, families, caregivers, and professionals with local resources, inclusive programs, and assistive technology. It features exhibitors, guest speakers, community organizations, and opportunities to learn more about accessibility, innovation, and inclusive services shaping more connected futures. Kickstart staff will be on site at a booth with membership materials, our access kit (which includes fidgets, PPE, and more), and an openness to connection with the community. We're excited to have a presence at this wonderful event for the first time, and look forward to meeting team members from other organizations supporting disabled people across Turtle Island. Learn more about the event at the link in our bio. Are you planning to go to Abilities Expo? Let us know in the comments! #AbilitiesExpo #ConnectedFutures #Accessibility #DisabilityFoundation #AssistiveTechnology #YVREvents
