‘My body, Writes into your flesh The poem You make of me’ — Audre Lorde „ETUDE #16161D“, was the last creation I made to finish my 38th orbit around the sun — a study in hook suspension, live musical performance and darkness (ca.30’). Thank you for an incredible ride. I’m already excited for the next spin!! Hex code #16161D, otherwise known as Eigengrau is the unique colour the human eye perceives in the absence of light or complete darkness. In the space of this darkness, with Audre Lorde’s words, I imagined a time when all bodies have equal rights and autonomy, when erotic expression no longer involves negotiation with systemic powers sick with bigotry and magical thinking, and when the expression of the body in joy and symbiosis with their chosen others is a birthright lived fully and freely, indiscriminately. In this time, how will we play out our existence? What will it feel like? How will it sound? Perhaps, if we are able to imagine it and design it, we will find ourselves closer to that moment than we ever thought possible? Flesh-hook body suspension was born partly from rituals for Shiva; a non-being, divine darkness whose power — unlike light, which has a beginning and end — is always and eternal. ETUDE #16161D was commissioned by @wienerfestwochen (2025) and first performed in the programme of Akademie Zweite Moderne curated by Jana Beckmann on 8 June 2025 at the @radiokulturhaus Radiokulturhaus. 2022 was the year we plunged the @theatrechatelet into complete darkness for the ressurrection of extinct bird cries in CONNAISSEZ-VOUS LE CRI DU CHOCARD? for Orchestra, light and darkness. The voices of the dead imprinted onto me and found their voice in this piece. These were the extinct Kauai O’o (last recorded in 1987) the Moa, extinct 700 years ago, whose call was re-constructed by scientists using fossil information and Mahler’s Cuckoo of musical fiction. Written for the same orchestration as Gustav Mahler’s Blumine - the orphaned movement of Mahler’s First Symphony - Connaissez-vous le cri du chocard? contains various gestural references to Mahler’s First Symphony. It is an antiphon to the dead and a question for those who love the living. Full recording is available on Youtube. Commissioned by @orchestredechambredeparis first rehearsed at their home @philharmoniedeparis and performed at @theatrechatelet 24 March 2022. RE:BIRTH Inbetween a suspended foetus and a thing with wings, RE:BIRTH is a ten hook suspension that was created to mark meaning into the repetitive nature of birthdays. Last Wednesday, Jamie Man performed “Transubstantiation” at the opening of MEGA Art Fair in Milan (@megaartfair ). A first-of-its-kind piece exploring the musical and theatrical expressions of English terroirs, “Transubstantiation” begins with a deliberate orchestration of sounds recorded from the winemaking process at Hundred Hills winery (@hundredhillswine ). Over the duration of the performance, its narrative increasingly embraces chance and improvisation. The Milan performance introduces the addition of a lobster, surrendering to the absurdity and pleasure of consumption. Jamie Man (@jamieman___ ) is an interdisciplinary artist working across opera, installation, & performance. With a practice grounded in sound and its relation to poetic presence, Jamie’s work spans from staging large symphonic orchestral forces to live flesh-hook body suspension performance. As a conductor Jamie works internationally, often premiering both her own compositions & those of other contemporary composers. 水托邦/ HYDROTOPIA , film and live performance on 30 January 2026, 21.30 UBIK at @worm_rotterdam with @iffr In extreme cold, the human body can turn against itself through paradoxical undressing: failing nerves mistake freezing for heat, compelling the dying to shed their last protection. In 水托邦 (Hydrotopia), hydrophones frozen into a block of ice capture the material disintegration of their frozen body as a projected film gradually emerges into clarity. The film follows artist Jamie Man suspended by hooks pierced through flesh in a British winter landscape, practicing rituals rooted in Shiva-dedicated traditions that explore a state of perpetual non-being. As the ice surrenders its form and the image sharpens into focus, transformation itself becomes the subject: matter abandoning one state for another, the body held suspended between dissolution and emergence.
