My last night in Manila, spent over an unforgettable dinner with the two women who shaped so much of who I am — my Mom & Tita G ❤️🇵🇭 A meal woven with Filipino culture and craft — the kind we all deeply love and appreciate. Maraming maraming salamat, Barangay @toyoeatery , May, and Chef Jordy! (And congrats on the Michelin star — so very well deserved, and so glad we got to finally go after years of @mignac_ photos + posts and before that was announced 😅)

Remembering Ryuichi Sakamoto. I didn’t know his work deeply as much as my sister, but the hauntingly beautiful, Last Emperor musical score is forever etched in our memories — having grown up watching the film multiple times when we had it on laser disc. Thanks to my sister, his big fan @tammydavid for making sure I saw his show in @mot_museum_art_tokyo . When he was on the cover of Lindsay magazine a few years ago, Mohammed and Ali mentioned that they knew him as a longtime regular, and that he lived just around the corner from @casamagazinesnyc but haven’t seen much anymore. I never got to meet him but glad to have experienced this, pay respects and bring back more copies of his Brutus feature back to Casa 🤍

NYC, the most ethnically diverse, religiously varied, commercially driven, famously congested, and, in the eyes of many, the most attractive urban centre in the country. No other city has contributed more images to the collective consciousness of Americans: Wall Street means finance, Broadway is synonymous with theatre, Fifth Avenue is automatically paired with shopping, Madison Avenue means the advertising industry, Greenwich Village connotes bohemian lifestyles, Seventh Avenue signifies fashion, Tammany Hall defines machine politics, and Harlem evokes images of the Jazz Age, African American aspirations, and slums. The word tenement brings to mind both the miseries of urban life and the upward mobility of striving immigrant masses. New York has more Jews than Tel Aviv, more Irish than Dublin, more Italians than Naples, and more Puerto Ricans than San Juan. @bcbench @happydavid @tammydavid

3.7 MILE EARTH DAY WALK 🌎 Did you know that Millions of People walk an average of that same distance one-way, each day, multiple times for hours just to find drinking water? And the water they may find is not guaranteed to be clean or safe. Big thank you to @citygirlswhowalk x @aveda for raising awareness through this walk today and donating to @charitywater — my walk ensures that 12 individuals in-need will have access to clean drinking water for the year via locally led, community-owned water solutions in rural communities 💦 ACCESS TO CLEAN DRINKING WATER is TRANSFORMATIVE for these individuals— they are healthier, get to go to school or work, spend more time with their families and be the best that they can be. Let’s not take our access to water (& parks) for granted! #AvedaWalksForWater #StandUpForCleanWater #ELCFamily #BeautyInspiredValuesDriven #EarthDay2023 #CityGirlWhoWalk

Congratulations, @_james_clar , @hidilyndiaz & @silverlensgallery New York team ‼️ Don’t miss BY FORCE OF NATURE exhibit up now until April 29, 2023 at Silverlens NY 505 West 24th Street and 10th Avenue. - @silverlensgallery : 🏋🏻‍♀️ Silverlens New York is pleased to present its first solo exhibition with James Clar, opening 9 March 2023. Titled ‘By Force of Nature’, the exhibition tracks the American artist’s trans-pacific move to his parents’ home country, the Philippines. Confronting the “American Dream,” the show addresses disparities between Filipino and American cultures, honing in on geo-political power dynamics, cross-cultural (mis)translations, and individual versus communal identities. Lightworks and sculptures will be featured alongside new video installations and pieces made in collaboration with Olympian Hidilyn Diaz. In 2020, Diaz won the first-ever Gold Olympic Medal for the Philippines and has since become one of the nation’s most beloved figures. Clar’s long-term practice fuses new media, pop-culture, and memory to explore the narrative potential of light and technology. Using themes of nationalism, globalism, and mainstream culture, Clar critiques the dissociative effects of technology itself in the age of mass information. Beyond his art career, he has three patents in the US for new engineering systems created while developing his light art. This exhibition marks a new phase for the artist as his work becomes more gritty and tactile than ever before. For Clar, this time it’s personal. #Silverlens #JamesClar #ContemporaryArt
