Legends donât just exist in history booksâthey walk among us, shaping culture, preserving heritage, and inspiring generations. Today, we unveil the first edition of đđđđŁđđđđ đźđđđđ , a celebration of those whose impact transcends borders and time.
And who better to grace our inaugural cover than the incomparable Dr Esther Mahlangu? đżđŚ
A true custodian of Ndebele art and global culture, Dr Mahlanguâs brushstrokes have told stories for over seven decadesâstories of resilience, beauty, and identity. From the walls of her childhood home in Mpumalanga to the halls of Art Basel, her work reminds us that tradition is not static; it lives, breathes, and evolves when passed from one hand to another, one heart to the next.
In conversation with @sheilaafari , Dr Mahlangu reflects on her journey, the power of intergenerational knowledge, and why true icons donât just createâthey uplift, they preserve, they đđ˘đŚ đđľ đ§đđłđ¤đ˘đđĽ.

From the archives: A test shoot I did in Canada years ago.
No matter how many years youâve spent behind the camera, growth never stops. Test shoots and creative collaborations are where magic truly happens. They sharpen your eye, challenge your creativity, and remind you why you fell in love with storytelling in the first place.
Some of the strongest images in my portfolio were born from experiments, shared ideas, and trusting the process with talented creatives. After years of shooting campaigns, editorials, weddings, and portraits across different parts of the world, one thing remains true: staying inspired requires staying curious.
Create often. Collaborate intentionally. Thatâs how timeless work is made.

A year ago today, we released this editorial story I photographed for Previdar and it still remains one of my favourite bodies of work Iâve created on African soil.
Editorial photography has always been one of the purest forms of storytelling for me. Beyond the aesthetics, I love the process of building worlds collaborating with stylists, designers, glam teams, art directors and incredible talent to create images that feel timeless, cinematic and emotionally honest. Itâs where fashion, culture, identity and imagination meet.
Over the years, Iâve had the privilege of shooting for some of the worldâs leading magazines and publications across different cities and continents, but there is something deeply special about creating work here in Africa. The energy, texture, light, elegance and richness of our stories always bring a different kind of magic to the frame.
This Previdar editorial was one of those shoots where everything aligned beautifully; the styling, the mood, the creative direction and the intention behind every image. Looking back a year later, Iâm still incredibly proud of what we created together and grateful to everyone who trusted my vision and contributed to bringing it to life.
More editorials. More storytelling. More African excellence.

To Showmax. Thank you!
You were more than a streaming platform! You were a stage. A stage for African stories, African voices, African faces. And behind every one of those stories, there were people like me⌠cameras in hand, on set before sunrise, chasing the perfect light for a poster, a campaign, a moment that would stop someone mid-scroll and make them feel something.
You gave local creatives a seat at the table. You said Mzansi stories matter. And the world listened.
I had the privilege of shooting campaigns that brought your shows to life....the colours, the characters, the drama, the joy. Those frames werenât just jobs. They were love letters to our culture.
Now the curtain falls on 30 April. The screens go dark. And I wonât pretend it doesnât sting.
But every image I captured for you lives on in feeds, in memories, in the work Iâm most proud of. You shaped my portfolio and my perspective. You reminded me why I do this.
Farewell, Showmax. You were Africaâs own.

Some of the fun campaigns we get to shoot, and this one was no small production.
We had close to 30 people on set, all working in sync to bring this Jack Danielâs campaign to life across Kenya and Nigeria. Casting was a mission in itself. Each market required a distinct approach, and for Nigeria, the models had to be strictly Nigerians to align with the countryâs national billboard and advertising policies. Precision wasnât optional, it was the brief.
This was a major cross-continental effort, with around four agencies collaborating between the US and South Africa. Pre-production alone ran for over two months, packed with planning, coordination, and yes⌠more Zoom meetings than anyone would care to count.
As a commercial photographer, one of the most valuable skills you can have is the ability to connect with multiple people at once, to read the room, draw out authentic emotion, and keep everyone aligned. Because when youâre shooting a group, it only takes one person being out of sync to throw off the entire frame.
Huge gratitude to the team for showing up sharp, focused, and ready. Everyone brought their A-game and we absolutely knocked it out of the park.
On to the next one.

Time and time again, I get asked about the gear, specifically the lens, I use.
While equipment is ultimately just a tool in the creative process, my go-to lens for beauty work is the @canonrsa EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM.
The focal range gives me the compression I need for flattering facial proportions, and the optics deliver minimal distortion, which is critical in beauty where skin texture, symmetry, and detail matter. At 135â200mm, the perspective compression is especially elegant, isolating the subject while maintaining natural geometry.
Itâs not about the gear but when the tool supports the vision this precisely, it earns its place in the kit.
