Back in Sequoia Crest (Sequoia National Forest) for the first time since December 2024 and just over five years after the Castle Fire destroyed 174000 acres of the forest surrounding our community. The signs of recovery are mixed. Image 1 - young Giant Sequoias from the replanting initiated by @savetheredwoods and @ucberkeleyofficial in front of a Sony’s tree, a giant sequoia lost to the 2020 Castle Fire Image 2 - One of the trees from the replanting effort Bob and I initiated in 2021/22 as part of @fire_complex in collaboration with three local communities @archangelancienttree @u.s.forestservice @calfire has a one year head-start and is doing very well. Some of our trees are now almost twice as high as me (image on a sunny day before the snow came). In the background some of the surviving Grove. Image 3-4 more images from the @savetheredwoods and Berkley University replanting initiative. Is having at the front of the image some trees planted by them in 2023, in the middle ground a couple of fire survivors, in the background is forestry service land. /blog/video-how-to-restore-a-giant-sequoia-grove/ Images 5-8 - the drive up the mountain remains gruelling. Areas that have been left untouched are currently unstable and dangerous and show limited new growth. The change of seasons and reveals how few trees have survived the fire or are now regrowing. #giantsequoia #wildfirerecovery #forestfires #utakögelsberger #replanting #artandclimatechange #ecoart #aldercreekgrove

A very big thank you to the wonderful Dave Pritchard @depdendros for his beautifully written, carefully considered and thoughtful and review of Some Kind of Love (last day this Saturday 24/01) for #ecoartscotland @chrisfremantle follow the link on the header Among species, global warming produces winners and losers. Among humans, those suffering are mostly not the ones who have driven the problem. The costs of disaster response and cleanup nonsensically far outweigh what it would have cost to invest in sensible prevention (….) … Uta Kögelsberger has fearlessly and compassionately questioned what humanity’s sociocultural and political systems are supposed to do about these dilemmas, paradoxes, interconnections, contradictions and failures of governance. Her Hatton exhibition is “some kind of” manifesto for what value art might be positioned to add in response, with its repertoire of specialist methodologies for social engagement and creatively forensic investigation, as well as the capacity to create an affecting experience through the carefully judged combination of elements engaging our minds and our senses, in this case out of an event very remote from the viewer. @hatton_newcastle @newcastle_uni_fine_art #artandcliamtechange #WILDFIRES #barkbeetles

Last three weeks of ‘Some Kind of Love: Actions and Reactions to Living on Damaged Planet’ at @hatton_newcastle The exhibition brings together 4 bodies of work that each in their own way explore our complex relationship to the environment. It includes the @royalacademyarts #wollastonaward winning video installation Cull as part of @fire_complex that contributed to changes in wildfire mitigation in Giant Sequoia groves; #Forestcomplex, a commission by @inn_situ_btv that unpacks the crisis in Alpine Forests; the video installation Off Road @lacma collections part of a trilogy of works about how the notion of freedom is lived out in relation to the landscapes of the American West and #froestchoir #somekindoflove, a collaboration with the #brusselsopera youthchoir, a playful interpretation of the notion that if we regularly play music to plants it accelerates their growth and improves their immune system. With many thanks to he team @hatton_newcastle , to @newcastle_uni_fine_art , @newcastleuni , @lamonnaie.demunt , @btvbank , @inn_situ_btv , @eveschillo , @hans_joachim_goegl , @daniellearnaudgallery The exhibition closes on January 24

I stand with @unitedartistsforclimate during COP30. United Artists For Climate is a global campaign by contemporary artists committed to the environment, led by @artofchange21 and @labverde Icecaps are melting, forests are burning and sea levels are rising. When faced with challenges of such a large global scale it is hard to envisage ways to respond. But remember change is cumulative. It can start with us here locally. We each have a sphere of influence, and I would like to invite to use your sphere of influence, to make a difference. In the cultural industries we are uniquely positioned to inspire, to bring people on board, to trigger care. Without care there is no action. Without action there is no change. 1) Replanting initiative after the #CASTLEFIRE as part of @fire_complex put over 6000 trees back in the ground and contributed to changes in wildfire mitigation 2) Forest Choir a collaboration with the #brusselsoperayouthchoir to sing forest ecosystems back to health on show as part of Some Kind of Love: Actions and Reactions to Living on Damaged Planet is on view @hatton_gallery until January 2026 3) Fire-complex in downtown LA #standardvision 4) Forest Choir Jesmond Dene, 2025 as part of #remembernaturemetzger 5) and 6) Clearance, currently on view @hatton_gallery 7) Nurse-stump, currently on view @hatton_gallery 8) replanting effort, see above 9) We Want! Some Kind of Love Actions and Reactions to Living on a Damaged Planet is on view at the Hatton Gallery until 24 January 2026

'Some Kind of Love: Actions and Reactions to Living on a Damaged Planet', a climate-focused solo exhibition by award-winning artist Uta Kögelsberger at @hatton_newcastle , beautifully timed with @baltic_gateshead 's 'For All At Last Return'. Kögelsberger (@fire_complex ) explores climate change’s impact on forests in Austria and the US. Through a series of photographs and videos, she looks at how Austrian forests are being devastated by beetle infestations and intense rainfall that weakens root systems, causing vast trees to collapse down hillsides. A lone forest ranger in an orange high-vis jacket appears against a massive landscape of dying trees, working with limited resources to address this environmental disaster. Her focus in the US includes a video capturing an LA tradition of 4x4s driving to the beach through the mist, evoking the American Wild West and Mad Max. The attention then returns to the trees, looking at the plight of the sequoias on the West Coast. Uta herself has lived through a forest fire, which she describes as extremely stressful. In her final video, she collaborates with a Belgian choir who each sing their love to a forest tree, offering a sense of hope in this moment of crisis for our woodlands. 'Some Kind of Love' continues @hatton_gallery until 24 January 2026 'For All At Last Return' continues @baltic_gateshead until 7 June 2026 Installation views, Uta Kögelsberger, 'Some Kind of Love' at Hatton Gallery, Newcastle. Image cluster from Some Kind of Love: Actions and Reactions to Living on a Damages Planet on show at the Hatton Gallery through to January 2026. Images include: 1) replanting 2) Nurse stump (CA) 3) Nurse Stump (AU) 4) lychen 5) Some Kind of Love, Entangled and 6) Floppy Tree III. At the centre is the single channel video wowdworks, from Austria: The single-channel video Woodworks captures the next phase in the journey of storm-felled trees. Filmed from the observation platform of a sawmill operated by one of Europe’s largest wood conglomerates, the video observes the logs as they begin their transformation into marketable products. Each region in Austria is allocated a yearly quota of wood to be harvested. In the wake of the storms, this quota was exceeded by 80%, flooding the market and causing a 25–35% drop in timber prices—an economic blow to forest owners. #SOMEKINDOFLOVE @hatton_newcastle #utakögelsberger @inn_situ_btv #hansjoachimgoegl
