During the autumn I was pleased to visit The Lizard peninsula on a visit to Kestle Barton. An ancient Cornish Farmstead above Frenchman’s Creek and the Helford River. A special place where a gallery, a garden, meadows and orchards meet.
The first picture shows ‘reception’ and shares what you can see now, Brian Ingam’s exhibition, Flowers and Jugs, (the fourth image).
This week a chance to meet and walk with Hamish Fulton as part of Remember Nature, the Nationwide Day of Artist led Action. The third image shows Hamish’s exhibition in 2018.
I have started work on an exhibition, ‘Our Garden. Growing, Making, Living’, for the coming spring (28/3 – 14/6).
Perhaps come to the far Southwest then, spend time in this place. There will be walks, talks, a flag for the garden, a polymer etching made by the master printer Simon Marsh of the ancient hawthorn tree’s blossom. A key moment in our garden lying within the Crucible. Here light and nature fuse.
It will be a chance to celebrate May Day in the orchard’s blossom.

In early May the wood is filled with a blue haze moving across the green. I would walk this path to the studio, within the Dark Room making a picture from the bluebell.

Winged Hawthorn, spring and late autumn 2011. The trees and hedgerows of Homeland and Hayne Down (detail).
In the Crucible the ancient hawthorns are slowly breaking bud. Scattered through the emerging crown, the precious ‘winged’ leaves can be seen.

“We have learned along the way that the cultivation of a garden is a deeply personal response to a place, shaped by the passage of time and how the land accommodates human presence. The pattern of our lives has evolved as we have discovered together what a garden on Dartmoor at a thousand feet might become. The garden has cared for and nurtured us.”
