NEW SINGLE: “Setwun -Honesty” Out today: the lead track from @setwun ’s vinyl EP Visions in Venus - a four‑track release that merges jazz, soul, and electronic textures into a focused, expansive sound. For an artist who has always blurred the lines between soul-jazz roots and the contemporary club context, this release is another string to the bow of a fusionist who echoes the mindset of Dego & 2000Black, Floating Points, or even the more melodic side of Moodymann in the EP’s blend of live instrumentation, deep grooves, and soul-rooted experimentation. Known to many in Sydney’s underground scene, Setwun (Josh Panakera-Molony) has spent years shaping his sound from beat tapes and remixes, to his debut EP ‘Our World’, to live shows with his band The Soulstranauts. We’re proud to welcome Setwun to our global roster. Visions in Venus EP drops later this year. Stream and download the lead single now - link in bio.

Looking over past photos and found some unreleased shots by Dan Medhurst @danmedhurst of our trip to Uganda in 2019. Our friend Porgy @theporgiesideofgeorge invited us to the Wizkid @wizkidayo show he was producing in Kampala. Amazing time🔥

We had the opportunity to travel to see Baobab Studio’s new set of drums being made ahead of the ESP. residency. They were made by 70-year-old Safari Charo Somali, also known as Mzee Wa Ngoma (Man of the Drums) Safari has been making drums for over 40 years and is teaching his Grandson and others the techniques to ensure they are continued. We were very fortunate to be invited to visit Safari at his home to see the drums being made, Safari then visited the studio where the ESP. resident artists had the chance to learn from one of East Africa’s master craftmakers and a leading authority on drum-making worldwide. Huge thanks to Flava for making this experience possible. 📸 @danmedhurst

We are now back in London after what was a life-changing residency in Kilifi, Kenya. We first wanted to thank Kilifi. It’s a stunning part of the world filled with some of the kindest, most welcoming and hospitable people you could meet. We would encourage all to visit who are able to. Kusimu will also continue to be one of our favorite clubs in the world and DJ LYTA is our new favorite DJ! We will be eternally grateful to the 6 core artists who made the residency what it was. We were honored they decided to be a part of the project. They embraced the experience fully and created a very special bond as a group which you’ll hear in the music they’ve made together. Thank you @fauzia.1 @yazminlacey @nkariuki_ @jkarri_ @izzycofie & @setwun We also need to thank Matt Swallow @lastaglobal for his vision for the studio, and continued support and trust in the idea of our residency. The BTB team is family and we’re excited about the ideas we’ve been discussing for our continued collaboration. Lemi, Flava, Karim, Lewis, Krish and the rest of the amazing team at Baobabs Studio, you played such a huge part in our residency. Thank You, from all of us. Thanks to all the incredible musicians we met in Kilifi and to Max at @musicfromeastafrica for his guidance. @ongaro.music @katoiwatabaka_mijikendajazz @mbaluka.ke @mapembe2 @heka.mukizi @_i_am_lemi @official_dj_krishkenya @breathrenn @albiezkalimba @sjefrolet @malicknunda_official @pausax Huge thanks to the family of people who helped us along the way, all our friends at Salty’s, Kusumi, Mnarani Club, @chef_amolo and the Twisted Fig, Anton, and the many other supporters of the project. Much love to @the.black.bud @callajefferies and @oflynnmusic for making the week even more special. Huge thanks to Dan Medhurst @danmedhurst , ESP’s favorite photographer and part of the family since inception for his beautiful documentation of the project and friendships, and to a newer member of the family Obi @therawwgram for capturing such special moments on video. Special mentions to Elijah and Titus. Thanks to Arts Council England @aceagrams & Audio Technica @audiotechnicaemea for making this project possible.
