10 years ago today we lost one of the greatest of all time.
I've done several tributes to Prince over the past decade, both outside & on air.
The first was on my old
@itchradio show, four days after he passed.
There was another a year later at the defunct Archspace. I remember that being an enlightening moment. Like, it wasn't crazy busy, but everyone was very much there for one reason. The closest thing to church I've ever done. Shout to
@marciavidaljewellery who reminded me about that one recently.
There were a few in Shoreditch for
@thedoctorsordersuk ; one at The Book Club & one at JuJu's a few years ago that I played at with one of the capital's true authorities on the music of Prince,
@mbcelestine . This had a similar ethereal vibe. It's like the purest fanbase I've ever known.
I did a mix celebrating the 40th anniversary of 'Purple Rain' on
@bbc6music two years back, and recently updated & extended that mix with some extra tracks.
The latest version was broadcast on The Huey Show on
@virginradiouk last weekend - that's on the Virgin app now, or there's an extended version of the mix on my Soundcloud & HearThis pages. 50+ tracks / 60 minutes of purple funk.
All this aside, I've really never touched the sides. I'd need a mix a week long, maybe longer, to cover it all end to end. There are MANY tributes out there, I know, & deservedly so.
Not including the seeds sown that built the careers of others along the way, from the members of The Revolution & the NPG, & so many more, producing or songwriting, & cementing the Minneapolis sound, along with former band members Jam & Lewis.
I actually feel the older I get, the more of a fan I become.. It's truly astounding just how much music he made; how talented a musician he was; how influential a performer he was; how powerful a man he was. Hard to think of many that come close.
Creative, androgynous, sexually liberated & woke as f*ck. An industry game changer.
An unparalleled artist, gone far too young.
But life is just a party & parties weren't meant to last. ๐
Or to quote the poignant 'Sometimes it Snows in April' "all good things, they say, never last. And love, it isn't love until it's passed" ๐
