Still in disbelief. Deeply humbled and grateful that I WILL FOLLOW THE SHIP (@iwillfollowtheship ) has won the @artscouncilmalta Best International Achievement Award â¨
(and yes⌠we had massive stagefright đ weâre definitely not accustomed to being on stage, but some thank yous are very well deserved)
The journey of I WILL FOLLOW THE SHIP - the Malta Pavilion at @labiennale , was definitely not an easy one. Aside from everything, it demanded lots of perseverance, resilience and focus; we had huge responsibility to represent our country, our communities and the work we do. To see this project resonate so widely has meant more than we can say đ
Being voted among the Top 10 pavilions across major internationally acclaimed reviews (@guardian , @forbes , @theartnewspaper.official , @artribune , @ilgiornaledellarte ) and becoming the only pavilion from the Venice Biennale to make it to the @dezeen Top 10 exhibitions worldwide in 2024, was already an incredible honour. To receive this award on local grounds, is a privilege.
A very special thank you to @_matthew_attard_ for your vision (pun intended), dedication and trust and for carrying this project with such commitment from the very beginning. Iâm so proud of you!
This award feels like a moment to pause, acknowledge the work and say THANK YOU đđź. Thank you to everyone who believed in the project, supported it, collaborated on it and carried it forward in ways seen and unseen.
Your trust and commitment shaped everything.
Onwards with our journeys. Where shall we sail to next? âď¸âľď¸

Nothing is Clear / Artist Spotlight: Romeo Roxman Gatt
Works: Cruiser (2021)
Romeo Roxman Gattâs work presents hybrid, asymmetrical forms that act as sites of transformation and care. Constructed from reclaimed materials, the sculpture reworks symbols associated with power and masculinity, holding tension between protection and vulnerability. Drawing from non-binary and trans experiences, the work opens up space for resilience, resistance and the reconfiguration of identity beyond fixed structures.
Romeo Roxman Gatt is a Malta and London-based multimedia artist working across performance, sculpture, video, sound and text. His practice engages with questions of sexuality, identity and gender through contemporary material culture, often drawing on car culture and critiques of macho behaviour. A graduate of the Royal College of Art, he has exhibited internationally and co-founded Rosa Kwir, Maltaâs first queer-focused gallery and project space.

Nothing is Clear / Artist Spotlight: Kane CalĂŹ
Works: Dying Light - âGuess I shouldnât have kept the knife in my heart for so longâ (2025), Orphan Rock 3 (2025), Orphan Rock 5 (2025), Orphan Rock 6 (2025), Dying Light: Dopamine Stream (2026)
Kane CalĂŹâs works engage with technological production, automation and material transformation. Fabricated through industrial processes, they reflect a shift where authorship moves from hand to system and where precision and optimisation no longer guarantee meaning. Alongside this, his works with stone approach geological matter as a carrier of time and accumulation, positioned between natural formation and constructed systems that underpin contemporary life.
Kane CalĂŹ is a Maltese artist whose practice spans ceramics, glass and 3D printing across both virtual and physical environments. His work reflects an ongoing engagement with data, material processes and contemporary discourse. A graduate of the Royal College of Art, he has exhibited widely across Malta and internationally.

Nothing is Clear / Artist Spotlight: Rebecca Bonaci
Works: Beyond âUsâ and âThemâ (I, II) (2026)
Rebecca Bonaciâs works open up a space where boundaries soften and distinctions begin to dissolve. Moving beyond binary structures, they reflect on shared experience and the possibility of connection across difference. Positioned between intimacy and collectivity, the works suggest a shift from individual perspective toward a broader sense of relational awareness.
Rebecca Bonaci is a Maltese artist whose practice is shaped by personal experience and emotional immediacy. Working across visual art and tattooing, her work explores how intimate moments resonate on a wider human level. She has exhibited widely in Malta and internationally, including participation in the Malta Biennale and recent solo exhibitions at Valletta Contemporary.
@axis_artgallery is open from Monday to Friday (10:00â19:00hrs), Saturday (10:00â13:00, 16:00â19:00hrs) and Sunday (10:00â13:00hrs)
