Last weekend we celebrated the 5th year anniversary of @blackreconstructioncollective and the final stop of Unmonument, our nomadic sculpture—a customized off-the-shelf maintenance lift that has been traveling across the U.S. to multiple cities from Chicago (@awstudioart & @atelieroffice.nyc ) to Brooklyn (@kidcadaver ), Bellefonte (@fadometer ) to Los Angeles (@yolande_daniels ), and finally, Atlanta. None of this would be possible without our brilliant curator and producer @zionestrada and her practice Black Discourse In each city Unmonument has been offering a more ephemeral and transient notion of monumentality—one that unsettles the debates around the role and efficacy of monuments built to mark the violence of empire. For the Atlanta iteration, Animist Unconscious, our work builds on concepts proposed by the late poet and literary scholar Harry Garuba who wrote about a sociocultural practice he called Animist Materialism, otherwise theorized a continual re-enchantment of the world. On Friday evening, we gathered with a stellar group of co-hosts (@babywasu @too_black @rasul.i.am @tonikaj @nikishka @elletatebaeza ) to expand, challenge, and further articulate these ideas. Offering thoughts on global black displacement, the laundering of black rage, neighborhood structuring, new models for collective stewardship and para-institutional frameworks. On Saturday, we opened our installation as part of @thegoatfarm yearly public art program SITE. We premiered our film (co-directed with the one and only @zionestrada ) with a soundscape by @baexploitation videography by @chattam and lidar scans by @virshah_ . Publishing Expanded: Where Is Africa: February 9-11 @cara_the_org Publishing Expanded: Where Is Africa, the first event in an annual winter public program that centers our recent and forthcoming publications! Taking place at CARA from February 9-11, 2024, this 3-day convening will kick off our interdisciplinary series on the occasion of the launch of Where Is Africa, edited by Emanuel Admassu @eadmassu and Anita N. Bateman @anicurateslife , designed by Mutiti Studio @nontsimutiti , with a foreword by Mabel O. Wilson @studio_and . Where Is Africa has been an extended set of exchanges with contemporary artists, curators, designers and academics who are actively engaged in representing the continent-both within and outside its geographic boundaries. To celebrate the book’s launch, CARA will host a multi-day gathering featuring Where Is Africa editors, designer, contributors, and invited guests. The program will unfold through workshops, talks, screenings, and a special bookstore and reading room selection. Participants include: Editors Emanuel Admassu and Anita N.
