The 10th edition of the Palestine International Marathon took place in Bethlehem today on May 8, 2026. Returning after a two-year pause due to the gemocid inflicted by Israel in Gaza.
This year’s event features thousands of runners in a show of solidarity for freedom of movement, despite Israel’s brutal occupation.
Over 1000 international runners joined the marathon this year, including UK medic
@dr.jamesdsmith , who has also support medical aid mission during the Gaza genocide escalation in 2023.
The race starts and finishes at Manger Square, outside the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem.Distances: The event includes a full marathon (42.195 km), half marathon (21 km), 10 km, and a family-friendly 5 km race.
The marathon route in Bethlehem typically runs alongside the separation wall, aiming to showcase the restrictions on movement in the West Bank.
Organizers, including the Right To Movement group, highlight the event as a call for peace, unity, and the right to freedom of movement. Under the current aprthied and brutal occupation inflicted by Israel, Palestinians cannot move through Gaza, Westbank, Jeruselum or anywhere without going through many checkpoints, searches, and denied entries. A simple trip to get groceries or medical treatment can be a day trip, which often leads to harassment by IOF, beatings, or detention.
There is also no privacy, with cameras set up watching every move Palestinains make in their own homes, using the most advances surveillance technology by Palantir (the same software company that has taken UK NHS & government contracts).
