Walking & Gathering - Cameraless photowalk with Sherry Zheng - Japanese follows (日本語は英語文章の後にあります) We often think of actions as something we take in pursuit of a goal and/or objective. But what if we shift the focus to the act itself? When we soften our fixation on the target, we may begin to notice the quiet beauty in the periphery — the hidden charm of our surroundings, the small, everyday miracles that are always there, waiting to be seen. We have invited photographer Sherry Zheng to the naturally abundant town of Fujimi, where she'll conceive and lead a unique experience: a cameraless photo walk. Just spend 15-20 minutes walking together through a small forest, slowing down, tuning in, and rediscovering — without ever lifting a camera. Special thanks to @shinshu_ac

We need 1000% more parks ! 🌳🌳🌳 I got a chance to spend a couple days leading up to CNY with family in Shanghai, working on a project, and sitting in parks. 鲁迅公园was my favourite.

para_ is a part of MaggZ’s movement direction series (!) - a series to embody the change we wish to see in the world <3 the prefix para- comes from ancient Greek and primarily means "beside," "alongside," or "beyond”. para_ is a response, a way to let go what needs to be let go of, yet also to cultivate the paranormal force and superpower that we can channel imagination and hope creative direction + movement direction: @magg._z producer: @magg._z styling: @age.of.foolishness garments: @sschafer_ @chel_____sea @spitsubishi2.0 photography + post production: @dontcallmeshellyeither casting: @magg._z assist: @kierancrowe hmua + talent: @therealedwinliberty @_jamilaescobar_ @kiraholland_ @iwalanilawton @teevella

I met Linh on @graceytt ’s film set last year, it was not long after when I asked them to sit for a Cocoon portrait. I wanted to photograph Linh on the pole, but at home, in a space just for the private self and no one else. When we first met, I found Linh has the ability to seemingly plunge deep into thought even in the presence of the camera. Although I won’t know what they’re actually thinking, I feel like they’re plunging into themself and accessing an interior, which we get a momentary flash of when the shutter releases. This first photo is one of my favourite Cocoon portraits to date, and was chosen as an Olive Cotton finalist (slap me). The beautiful handprint by @sandyprints1 - framed by @emergentdesigns - is now up in @tweedregionalgallery until 2nd of November 💫 (caption follows) ・・・ 𝙇𝙞𝙣𝙝’𝙨 𝘾𝙤𝙘𝙤𝙤𝙣 (2024) 100 cm high and 150 cm wide C-type handprint, Acrylic face-mounted in Aluminium Linhqu is a multidisciplinary queer performance artist of Vietnamese heritage. As the founder of Club Chrome, a LGBTQIA+ collective prioritising POC and sex worker communities in Australia and Singapore, they champion work by marginalised artists. ‘Linh’s Cocoon’ finds Linh in their living room, finding space and solace during practice on the pole - a moment for vulnerability and reflection. This portrait is part of a wider body of work called ‘𝘾𝙤𝙘𝙤𝙤𝙣’ that explores the Asian diasporic experience and identity through portraiture and the metaphor of the cocoon - a liminal space of transition: new and old; growth and pain.

Some time ago, Sherry Zheng ( @dontcallmeshellyeither ) came to the studio to take these pictures. I have been under the weather this last week and missed coming to the studio to practice with my machine. I’ve done some reading, developed ideas and I couldn’t wait to get back in today. Here, you see me in my natural habitat, where I love to be and sometimes where I can’t wait to get out of. The practice of machine knitting is quite solitary, always focused on the task, counting rows and following a sequence in my head. Everyone is instructed to leave me alone. Thank you so much Sherry for capturing these BTS shots of me working, I had no idea I was contorting myself like this above the machine, it’s interesting to see oneself from the outside. A nice opportunity for everyone to see my space within @heavenstudio.sydney .

It has been a funny experience welcoming visitors into my car the past few weeks. Usually I’d be offering someone a lift somewhere but this time I invite them to get in the driver’s seat of my static car, parked inside Puzzle Gallery, as I watch from outside the car. It has been heartwarming to see families crowd into the car, friends and contributors, peering over the steering wheel, waiting to see the faces of their loved ones pop up on the slideshow. Surreal to take pictures of people posing with my first car, surrounded by so many portraits of others with their first cars. First Car is a rumination on the Asian diaspora, the immigrant experience, and the relationship between memory and storytelling. I’ve been reflecting as a 2nd-gen Chinese-Australian on how I focus on the sacrifice and hardships of my parents’ narrative, filling in the blanks while interpreting our family photographs, but often negating the joys and the highs that were also had. Balloons in the boot, First Car is a celebration of the joy and the highs of the Asian diaspora and the immigrant experience. 𝙁𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩 𝘾𝙖𝙧 by Sherry Zheng (@dontcallmeshellyeither ) On view now at @puzzle.artgarage until 17 August Featuring photos & videos from @notthedoodlingcellist @ngowyn @natlikesdumplings @shirleywu.studio @annekitnguyen @thaobee @johanna__ng @andysfrnds @kevincheng @cass.hnrs @katherinezhangles @fax_lyrical @itadaki.store @luna_wenxinxu @basewhite_printing Film screening event next week! Stay tuned. 🚘 Everyone remembers their first car — the make, the model, the freedom it promised. In this deeply personal and community-driven project, Sherry Zheng steps into the role of curator and archivist, collecting stories and photographs from Asian-Australian families and friends to map shared journeys of migration, memory and belonging. Spanning generations and geographies, the exhibition transforms Puzzle Gallery —once a garage—into a living archive of first rides, new beginnings and quiet resilience. This is a photo I rediscovered of my dad while preparing for 'Cocoon' last year - this is him in his first ever car at the age of 30, after migrating to Sydney in 89. He found it at the Flemington Car Markets. The Celica was short lived however, my mum arrived a year later and they wondered how they going to fit a baby seat in there. A means of mobility, family, income and even anonymity - ‘First Car’ is a new body of work for me and a portal of sorts, that commemorates the sentimental value of cars as more than just vehicles in immigrant families. ・・・・・・・・ 𝙁𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩 𝘾𝙖𝙧 by Sherry Zheng (@dontcallmeshellyeither ) Opening: Saturday, 12 July, 6–8pm Exhibition dates: 12 July – 17 August In 𝙁𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩 𝘾𝙖𝙧, Sherry Zheng reflects on memory, migration, and personal histories through archival photographs and intimate gestures of storytelling.
