Happy 1-year DJ anniversary to me and my homegirlsss 🎧✨ A year ago, I did something that really scared me: I stepped up to a DJ controller and played for an audience for the first time. Sweating, shaking, and cheeks sore from all the smiling, I played my first set (mix up now on SoundCloud!) and it was thee best feeling. And I kept stepping up. Gig after gig, pushing past the uncertainty and perfectionism, embracing being a beginner.
I’ve learned so much this year. From how to play on everybody and they mama’s controller, to DJing on sticks/CDJs, to what to do when your equipment glitches out right before your set 😅. I’ve kept spinning through crazy weather, messed up in front of rooms full of people, and accidentally deleted more crates than I could count. And I’ve had some beautiful experiences too: playing my favorite songs for the people I love, bringing the vibes for moments that felt like home, connecting with so many over music. Every approving 🙂↕️ or 😮💨 reminds me I’m on the right path.
Thank you to my friends and family (and bae!) for pulling up to events, listening to mixes, booking me, mentioning my name, and just hyping me up. Your support means the world. I feel so proud of and excited for the selector I’m becoming. And thank you to my
@herdjclub girlies for being exactly what I needed. On the first day of SZN 2, our profesoras asked what we wanted to get out of our time and I said I just wanted the confidence to play in front of people. And now look at me, I can’t wait to do it over and over again. 🥹✨
Bonus: last two slides show just how far back me and this DJ journey go. One is days after I got my first controller for Christmas (2020), and the other is an old pickup from my college radio show at Mizzou (2014). I’d felt so behind for so long, and I know now that I was right on time. 🥹
