“As a culture worker who belongs to an oppressed people my job is to make revolution irresistible.” - Toni Cade Bambara The more popular quote, “The role of the artist is to make the revolution irresistible..”, the split between the quotes is only 11 words. The original clearly whitewashed somewhere in history to be more inclusive of *others*. Still, both quotes serve as calls to action. As a general rule I don’t refer to myself (ancestors included) as “oppressed”, “slaves”, or “minorities”.. Mostly on some woowoo shit about the *the power of words* but also because we make up the GLOBAL majority, were ENSLAVED and “oppressed” just doesn’t sit well with me but I have yet to think hard enough about how to say the same thing without taking *ownership* of our position that’s due only to systemic racism enforced by *others*.. So “oppressed people” works. And I love that “culture worker” is the operative term for *artists* because that is what happens; the culture is worked into and shifted via different mediums. We seek out music, literature, paintings, movies, etc for entertainment but also to have our experiences reaffirmed; to resonate with something outside of ourselves. November I went to a book discussion where the author and 2 other local artists spoke on anticolonial movements of the past and how to weave them into our present + future. The major point that I walked away with was the importance of making a tangible difference and not just a symbolic one. It brings me back to the original quote, both quotes. At times I am wrapped up in and swept away by my own bullshit of “Let me just focus on me because the art I make is my contribution. Music beautifies life and can influence society blah blah” or whatever else I can come up with to justify inaction. The foundation of the Western mindset and a culture of individualism; counterproductive to the future we envision. Quotes used outside of context “Joy is the most radical form of rebellion” is a dangerous thing to tell Americans who frankly enjoy (consume) quite a lot. How then, as culture workers, do we make our art less self indulgent and more tributary to the world we wish to see?
