BRWNGRLZ IS AN IMMIGRANT OWNED BRAND. If you have a brand that goes up for our culture but won’t be political in times where other cultures are being oppressed, DO BETTER, cuz globally but in this country in particular, all of our struggles are tied. Since the first wave of Filipino farm workers to the last bebot off the boat, Filipino Americans couldn’t go up for their culture in this country without the farm workers, without Mexican immigrants, without the third world liberation front without ethnic studies without the civil rights movement.
We wouldn’t have the ~culture~ we have in America without taxi dance halls without the zoot suit riots without Buffalo soldiers bringing Black music to the islands, without Indigenous oral traditions, without Jamaicans discovering hip-hop without generations of people who still found language when they were forced into silence.
ALL OF US IF NOT THE GENERATIONS THAT CAME BEFORE US, CAME THROUGH HERE AS IMMIGRANTS. PAPERS OR NOT, OUR PEOPLE FED THIS COUNTRY, DIED FOR IT, CARE FOR THE SICK, TO THIS DAY, COME HERE FOR SURVIVAL, COME HERE FOR THE SAME DREAM THAT COLONIZERS HAVE BEEN TOTING IN OUR FACE TO MAKE US SECOND CLASS AND THIRD WORLD. BUT BEYOND UTILITY OUR HUMANITY MUST BE RECOGNIZED. THE STRUGGLE FOR LIBERATION IS ALL CONNECTED, SO WE MUST GO UP FOR EACH OTHER, IF NOT IN THE STREETS, AT LEAST DO IT ONLINE, AT LEAST DO IT BY LEARNING.

I wrote this poem the other night while thinking about how much I love my mom. I kept staring at the ceiling, and it brought me back to being a little kid lying under a kulambo, looking up at the soft canopy of the mosquito net above me. I started thinking about all the invisible barriers that hold and protect us, the ones built out of care, survival, fear, tenderness. How sometimes the very things meant to shield us also keep us distant from the other side of what we’re trying to reach.
A kulambo is so thin you can almost forget it’s there until the light catches it. You can pass through it so easily, untie it, lift it, let it fall again. And yet it still holds its shape around you, still creates a boundary between your body and the night. I kept thinking about how love works like that. How grief does too. How spirit does.
So much of what keeps us alive is unnamed, nearly invisible, inherited without explanation: gestures, silences, instincts, protections. Things we carry because someone before us needed them. Things we keep up even when we long to move through them.
In a span of 4 Tuesdays starting in West Oakland, so much went down:
-my car got stolen
-posted a video asking for help
-was able to raise the money to get a replacement
-the BRWNGRLZ website was almost all sold out
-my workshop sold out
-I was able to replace my laser parts that were also jacked
-The police found my old car trashed in San Leandro
But after all of that, I’m back on the road and in production mode!
Just wanted to give you all this update and thank everyone who contributed to me getting back to what I love to do.

This week has been hella hard for me behind the scenes. My family’s shared car was stolen along with thousands of dollars worth of tools and handmade inventory from my business.
This car is how I get to the youth I serve, how I support my parents in their medical appointments, and how I keep my business going.

Spent some time last weekend with the folks at Liyang NorCal learning about the conditions of the Lumad and activists in Mindanao and connected it back to the Bay. Super grateful for spaces like this where people can learn and understand the global struggles woven across our diaspora.

WE’RE SO BACK!
BRWNGRLZ will be in SF tomorrow at SOMArts for the closing reception of Cece Carpio’s Tabi Tabi Po from 6-9PM.
