Fun times playing with @martyjquinn and @bren10_drummer at @churchills_pub for @sweatrecords on Record Store Day! Here's some of what's going on in my subconscious as we improvise on "I'm an Old Cowhand (from the Rio Grande)", a 1936 standard by Johnny Mercer. I fell in love with this song through Larry Young and Grant Green's recording in 1964. It's a great vehicle for angular futuristic lines and folksy melodies, which makes sense since the original inspiration for the song came from seeing cowboys in their spurs driving around in trucks.

the way songs transform with different artists and in different contexts has always fascinated me! to celebrate the two year anniversary of it's release, i dug through my archives and wanted to share some different versions of one of my favorite compositions - "what I wish I said (marty's song)" Slide 1 is from the "Swamp Lily" album release at @four.miami on August 23rd, 2025 with @martyjquinn @philipwaldenjr @angelprz__ @_fishermonger @amar.is.online and @nihuhow Slide 2 is from May 2022, when @martyjquinn @leaderofthepast and i performed as "eris". I had just learned how to use ableton and wanted to incorporate electronics into the music we were making as a trio. Slide 3 is from a rehearsal at the Moss Center in October 2025, with choreography by @nihuhow and @jubbasd Slide 4 is from September 2025 at @shirleystheater in @grampswynwood adding @grahamvsounds and @tylerpons_ into the mix. i love observing how we navigate this new tempo, subtly adapting to discover the truest form of the song in that moment. Slide 5 is also from September 2025, this time played by the Swamp Lily Chamber Orchestra, again leading to new discoveries within the melodies of this song. people change, so should songs!

Wanted to share a bit about the process of creating the score for my upcoming ballet 'Swamp Lily', premiering next week as part of @miamilightproject 's Here and Now program! Songs and pieces feel like physical spaces to me so as I began to organize my audio tracks, I felt like I was digging into the earth and seeing sedimentary rock layers tell the story of how this world was born! Come see the full piece next week, ticket link in the bio!
