We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Mary Lovelace O’Neal— a pioneering, painter, printmaker, and educator whose work changed American art forever. Over a 60-year career, O’Neal created a body of work that was acutely personal and rooted in activism. We are honored to have her work, “She Wore Lime Green Jellies,” 1991, currently on view in the “David C. Driskell & Friends” exhibition. Driskell was one of her earliest mentors, and it was his encouragement that led her to the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. —— #frostartmuseum #fiu #marylovelaceoneal #daviddriskell 📸 Mary Lovelace O'Neal at her home in Oakland, California, in 1997.

📿🌀 #TertuliaNights Join us on Thursday, May 14 from 6–8 P.M for a conversation with Martin Tsang, PhD, whose work spans scholarships, archives, cultural heritage, and material practice. Exploring the long history of beads in Afro-Atlantic traditions, this talk examines religious Cuban Lucumí beadwork as a vital form of ritual practice, memory, and the transmission of knowledge centered on the orishas. Drawing on fieldwork and personal experience as a priest, anthropologist, and bead artist, Tsang considers how meaning is embedded in color, pattern, and process, and how these traditions evolve through interdiasporic cross-fertilization, with resonances in the work of Wifredo Lam and the writings of Lydia Cabrera. Support for this initiative is provided by the Art Bridges Access for All program and FIU CasaCuba. 🌟🔗 RSVP for free using the link in our bio. —— ♿️ Should you need an ADA accommodation to participate in a university event, program, or activity or need to request materials in an accessible format, please contact FIU’s Office of Civil Rights (OCR) at 305-348-2785 or [email protected] [1] “Image of altar for the deity or orisha, Oshun.” Photo: M Tsang. OPENING TODAY – The Academy: FIU Academy of Portrait & Figurative Art Exhibition 📌 On View: March 18 — April 19, 2026 “The Academy” presents work by students and alumni alongside their professor, David Y. Chang, from FIU’s Academy of Portrait & Figurative Art, spanning the program’s first eight years. Established by Chang as an atelier-based program within a public university, it is the first of its kind—and remains the only one housed within a public institution in the United States. “The Academy” emphasizes sustained studio practice, close and acute observation, and classical approaches to figurative drawing and painting, including portraiture, figurative composition, landscape, and still life. —— #FIU #FrostArtMuseum #ArtEducation #MiamiExhibitions #MiamiMuseums 🖼️ [1] David Chang, “Class Demo: Giverny”, 2022. ☁️🌀 Artist Eduardo Navarro presents a participatory workshop of his exhibition “Cloud Museum”, bringing together twenty-five performers wearing interlocking modular gowns that collectively form a moving cloud. Moving as a single drifting form, performers follow choreography shaped by light, breath, weather, and chance.  The work was first developed during a week-long workshop in July 2025 at the Walker Art Center and is now being activated at the Frost Art Museum.  👣 ⭐️ Are you a dancer, artist, or someone interested in body movement? Sign up to join the activation and help bring the cloud to life via the link in our bio. 📸 Photography by Kameron Herndon. —— #FrostArtMuseum #FIU #ContemporaryArt #Miami

🔖 The Frost Art Museum recently visited Nicklaus Children’s Hospital to see the installation of 1,000 paper cranes, created by our Interim Director, Miriam Machado, in collaboration with FIU’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. Inspired by the relationships strengthened during the 30th anniversary of the Wakayama Prefecture Agreement, the cranes reflect the Japanese tradition that folding 1,000 cranes symbolizes a wish for healing and hope. Alongside the installation, families received materials and instructions to fold their own cranes—sharing in a gesture of encouragement for children and loved ones receiving care. ——— #FrostArtMuseum #FIU #NicklausChildrensHospital
