Had a great time attending the @aco_uk Masterclass the other week led by @dbizzle007 Was lovely to talk everything operating and get a better understanding of doing the A camera role on a large film set. A huge thank you to the @aco_uk for running the course, and to @onestopfilms for letting us use the equipment and support the course as a whole. For anyone debating joining the ACO I would say it’s definitely helped me, both technically as an operator and also make connections within the industry itself. Contrast Ratio is Cinematic? - read on: When I started actively learning about lighting and figuring out some of the technical elements that would allow more creative freedom, in general; I found imagery with strong contrast ratios appealing to my eye. Why? Maybe when we look at a 2D image, the contrast ratios can draw us in further and encourage the eye to elaborate in our mind, what is being displayed. This is a concept long discussed and proven; though that isn’t necessarily ‘cinematic’ is it? What if the objective of the scene is to present an openness, an honesty and purity… yes words and acting, character etc. can do this, yet if we’re image makers; isn’t the goal to tell the story in such a way that the words are great and also not necessary to comprehend what the story is saying… It’s my belief that once you know a script as well as the actors do, the writer does and the director does, you put forward your motivations for each scene, how each character is seen; who’s scene is it? Who’s perspective? This should be a playful and educational negotiation... From this place, we can use light and colour and lack there of, to shape the spaces that fit these characters and we can paint with light in a way that benefits the character, for their environment to feel authentic and cohesive and in doing that; the show/movie is better off and all creatives have spoken in their best voice. The image posted here is from a short film I shot with writer/director @ev_golding named supported by @netflixuk and @ukfullyfocused We had one actor @zakiyyahdeen and one location, a therapists room, to tell a story over a year; through the seasons that were happening externally and internally. The fun part was creating the atmosphere for each season and garnishing with elements of rain or shape. Expectation vs reality #GoneClear

Sometimes I plan a shot for months in advance. Discussing every detail of how we’re going to do it. Storyboarding sketches. Getting each colour perfectly curated for the shot. Other times I rock up in the morning, and get an insane idea like asking someone to perform a bicycle kick 👀 Both can work when you have incredible crews who are dedicated enough to the craft 😂💪🏽 If it’s driven by story, it’s a good starting place. The story challenge for us was, how can we show the character Mackie is an absolute football maestro in the shortest period of time. Did we succeed? #goneclear #shortfilm #drama
