For over 100 years Belgium and the US have played major roles in shaping Congo’s destiny. With them never being prepared to let Congolese people have effective control over their own raw materials, (gold, diamonds, copper, cobalt and iron) they saw prime minister Patrice Lumumba as a threat.
Lumumba’s historical importance resides in a number of factors, including the impacts on Congolese politics and his pan-african ideology that went on to inspire many like Malcolm X. He wanted nothing but genuine independence for Congo and the ability to have total control over it’s resources in order for his people to utilise them to improve the living conditions. However, the west saw this as threat to their own interests (which was only to exploit Congo) resulting in Lumumba leading for only seven months before the CIA plotted to assassinate him in the most brutal way (chopped his body into pieces, dissolved in sulphuric acid and then buried it in an unmarked grave) a single tooth has only just been returned to Congo by Belgian authority...
That’s why “independence” day will always be bittersweet because if it’s not civil war it’s the good for nothing corrupted politicians destroying our lands. But despite the blues Congo still provides rhythms for the whole world to enjoy. If my people are going to do anything it’s Rumba and whine their waist like they’ve never whined it before.
