Dia de San Juan is a multicultural regional celebration of the monsoon and water as a life giver.
This year on Monday, June 24th a group of water protectors, community members and river stewards came together to care for the Julian and 18th street washes - major tributaries of the Santa Cruz River.
Community members participated in a cleanup of the Arroyos and a procession lead by elders and danza mexica to the river along Mission Lane, the historic passage connecting the east and west sides of the floodplain.
While the health of the river and it’s surrounding environment has changed since the nascent days of this cultural celebration, the power of community care and ritual was fully demonstrated as we called for protection of the river and the coming of the rains.
This experience was made possible by Favor Celestial, ACE/LUCHA, and Reconciliación en el RÃo - with support from the Wilderness Society
