On Friday, April 24, @hayward_rec hosted a community walk and film screening for #CelebrateTrailsDay. Participants explored historic campsite #98 before heading back to the Douglas Morrison Theater for the documentary "From Rails to Trails." @railstotrails Historic Campsite #98 sits along San Lorenzo Creek in Hayward. It was home to several Muwekma Ohlone villages when the Anza expedition explored the East Bay. Rangers Kimberly and Estrella had a wonderful time connecting with Hayward community members and sharing stories from the Anza Trail! 🚶‍♂️🚶 El viernes 24 de abril, el Distrito de Recreación y Parques del Área de Hayward organizó una caminata comunitaria y una proyección de cine con motivo del #CelebrateTrailsDay. Los participantes exploraron el histórico campamento n.º 98 antes de regresar al Teatro Douglas Morrison para ver el documental *From Rails to Trails*. El histórico campamento n.º 98 se encuentra a orillas del arroyo San Lorenzo en Hayward. @railstotrails and its process play a vital role in advancing trail development nationwide, including the long‑distance retracement trail we’re working toward at the Anza Trail. In 2011, the Anza Trail helped celebrate the opening of a segment of Joe's Trail, a utility property parallel to Union Pacific railroad tracks. 6 years later, the Anza Trail designated Joe's Trail as an official Anza Trail Retracement Trail segment. Celebrate Trails Day this April 25 to celebrate progress in trail development, learn more about nearby trails, and connect with your community. On this day 250 years ago, Juan Bautista de Anza led a small group of soldiers reached the mouth of San Francisco Bay – the Golden Gate. Anza then scouted the area for a suitable location to build a presidio. These are the origins of today's Presidio and eventually, the city of San Francisco. "I went to the narrowest opening made by the mouth of the port, where nobody had been before. There I set up a cross, and at its foot I buried under the ground a notice of what I have seen, in order that it may serve as a guide to any vessels that may enter, as well as a report of what I am going on to explore in order to establish the fort belonging to this harbor."
