I can’t think of a better way to start @ngvmelbourne Melbourne Design Week than with a visit to @deannorton ‘s Between Planes’. I recently discovered Dean’s work at the Art Fair and have been wanting one of his pieces ever since. Between Planes features his first foray into gold mirrors, encased in textured timber frames and housed behind glass to create the most beautiful slices of colour and reflections, encouraging the viewer to ponder their reflection. A stunning space not to be missed, I highly recommend adding Dean’s exhibition to your MDW schedule. Glass is the material @deannorton returns to most often. He is drawn to its performative qualities, how it animates a mirror, alters the perception of adjacent materials, and shifts in effect depending on what it sits alongside. Works such as Concave Convex Mirror, which appears to recede and project with changes in viewing angle, and Daylight Forever, a sculpted glass infinity lamp that mimics sunlight, demonstrates how consistently he uses material behaviour to shape his visual language.⁠ ⁠ His upcoming solo show, 'Between Planes', opens at @hotelhouse___ during @ngvmelbourne Melbourne Design Week from 14–17 May. Alongside some new glass works, Norton has created a series of ten mirrors, eight of which are 1.7 metres high, in walnut, gold mirror and dichroic glass, arranged in a circle so that you walk into the middle and the pieces begin reflecting off each other. The works float within the space on floor-mounted brackets, capturing light and shifting perspective. The material choice was partly site-responsive, as the building is a period property and Norton wanted something that felt residential and warmer than his earlier work. Reflections overlap, fragment and recombine.⁠ ⁠ At the link in bio, Norton and @georgiasmedley speak about his involvement in seven exhibitions during Melbourne Design Week, his admiration for Lee Broom, his appreciation for the manufacturers that work alongside him, and the ever-blurring lines between designer and artist, to which he shares that the crossover is just a personal element. “When the work is reflective of where you are as a person at the time of making it, that is when it becomes artistic expression.” Dean Norton's exhibition 'BETWEEN PLANES' is on display at @hotelhouse___ from 14 to 17 May. Mood Mirror / Vivid Red - Created for Superhot Shop… Presented by the wonderful @daniellebrustman / Part of @ngvmelbourne Melbourne Design Week. … Superhot Shop is the second iteration of the Superfab Shop, a ten-day pop-up shop, group exhibition and performance space located at Danielle Brustman’s design studio within the 47 Easy St precinct. This year, Brustman will paint the studio red and invite designers to create works that respond to themes and catchphrases revolving around the word ‘hot’. Prompts for designers include: ‘What’s hot, what’s not’, hot mess, hot flush, hot head, hot rod and hot topic. The Superhot Shop will be open throughout the week.
