A man asleep inside a wall. A kick of ball in a loading bay. A pocketful of sawdust finding its way into Murdoch’s presses. Three stories about Irish migrant labour, laughter, dead time, and the transmission of working-class method.
The Lump, the Kick, the Twist — presented yesterday at the Everyman Theatre, Liverpool, as part of ‘Who Does Not Envy With Us Is Against Us’, co-convened by Maria Fusco and Beth Hughes, with the WCBAN and Tate Liverpool.

In Cork this week for ‘Haunted Futures’ at UCC. Working with unruly objects and images, to consider the technological and affective entanglements of memory, material agency, and the built environment.
Thanks to conference organisers Dr Ellen Scally and Dr Rachel Gough

In Falmouth last week for ‘Haunted Modernities, Present Pasts and Spectral Futures’.
Sharing new writing on how certain images, buildings and lived experiences refuse to resolve into past tense—attending to the hotel’s layered material histories as an ongoing negotiation between personal memory, multispecies agency, and the long shadow of colonial and economic upheaval.
Conference hosted by Falmouth University and co-sponsored by Northeastern University. With great appreciation for @heholtruth and @ktsaxton

Last day of Óstán at Cill Rialaig Arts Centre.
‘While these modern ruins are an enduring reminder of the economic discontinuities of life on the periphery—for the birds, the hotel remains a going concern.’
More to come from this body of work in the near future.
With thanks to all at @cillrialaigarts and @holyshow.ie
Óstán: An exhibition of photographic works by Damien O’Connell.
Exhibition Opening and Holy Show Issue 06 Launch Party: *Tomorrow* Wednesday, August 21st, at 6pm
Originally known as Óstán Rinn Rua, the abandoned Waterville Beach Hotel is located on the coast of Ballinskelligs Bay.
The photographs in this exhibition, taken over the past two years, are part of an ongoing attempt to make sense of these modern ruins—to attend to their strange melancholy wonder—while also reflecting upon the complex narratives that shape our understanding of the past and its unrealised futures.

Pleased to make a miniature contribution to Making Bread with our Feet – part of the Gentle Gestures stream at the Midlands Conference for Critical Thought, at Nottingham Trent University. With thanks to @maggieayliffe ljonions @generalistjo@darthbracey and @studiodanicamaier
Part of an ongoing dialogue with ‘not knowing’ – exploring art school pedagogies – how language gives form to speculative gestures, and fosters interplay between attention, imagination and materiality.
