Artwork for Paul Hierophant – The Elder Gods [GTD.032] out now on @gatedrecordings Active in London’s electronic underground since the late 80s, Paul Hierophant has long worked in the space between techno, ambient, and dub, preferring atmosphere, tone, and slow-burn tension to obvious dancefloor tricks. This is an EP for selectors who like their electro expansive, slightly strange, and built for proper sound systems. New printed booklet for @jorumstudio and the opening of their new London store at 2 Marylebone Street. Conceived as a multi-sensory space, the store invites a dialogue between Scotland and the wider world, where craft, culture, and contemporary perfumery meet. Here, Jorum has curated a selection of objects and works including contemporary pieces by Scottish makers, antique curiosities and design classics chosen for their enduring relevance. These sit in conversation with international makers who share Jorum’s commitment to material integrity, craft, and considered design. The result is a space shaped by curiosity and intent; experienced through touch, atmosphere, and discovery. Design for The Modern Japanese Garden by Stephen Mansfield ( @stephen_mansfield_jp ) published by @thamesandhudson “Featuring gardens from Tokyo, Kyoto and Fujisawa to Osaka, Okayama, Fukuoka and beyond, this impressive overview includes major analysis of key works of interest through detailed garden profiles; insights into some of the most renowned Japanese garden designers across history; and a thoughtful exploration of the essential themes and developments in Japanese garden design. Roughly divided between pre- and post-1945 Japanese garden design, the book examines post-war shifts in attitudes towards the contemporary garden as they moved from status symbols and expressions of influence to spaces of healing and mediation. A short history of the Japanese garden, from pre-Shinto stone arrangements to the last years of the 19th century, sits alongside analysis of the contemporary gardens of Japan’s corporate buildings, museums, hotels and public spaces. Garden profiles – offering a comprehensive overview of the most iconic and influential gardens in Japan – include a mix of landscape- and smaller-scale gardens, including many recently completed examples. Interspersed throughout are short interludes, covering everything from the ancient garden of Ryoan-ji in Kyoto to the aesthetic lexicon of Japanese garden design, while essays from a number of high-profile contributors – Kengo Kuma @kkaa_official , Mira Locher, Tim Richardson and Masuno Shunmyo – meditate on particular themes.” Extent: 352 pp Format: Hardback Illustrations: 400 Size: 28×23 cm ISBN: 9780500026243 Typeface: Basel Grotesk + Basel Grotesk Mono by @optimofoundry Thanks to @murrayorr for the incredible photos 📸 #callinmackintosh #graphicdesign #typography #books #bookdesign #publishing #design #print #editorialdesign #thamesandhudson #japan #japanesegarden #japanesegardendesign #landscapedesign #japanesedesign #gradens #gardendesign #kengokuma #tadaoando #miralocher #timrichardson #masunoshunmyo

Another favourite project from last year was working on the rebrand for @guisados.leith The identity was inspired by imagery the team took of the hand painted signage found on the streets of Mexico. Guisados create fresh, exciting, authentic Mexican flavours in Edinburgh with locally sourced produce. Go them a follow for updates on their next pop-up 🌮🇲🇽 T-shirts screen printed by @printyardstudio #callinmackintosh #graphicdesign #typography #design #mexican #food #popup #mexicanstreetfood #streetfood #signage #colour #edinburgh #leith

Arcana by Briscoe Park A real honour to work on the first publication of @briscoepark 's incredible collection of work. Shown here are the renders of the standard and special boxed edition alongside Briscoe's photographs. Now funding via @vol.co "In Arcana, human-made structures appear to unravel and loom, while the surrounding fog itself seems human-made, like a smoke machine on a film set. Simultaneously, this place appears far removed from human touch – a brief glance into a parallel universe. Briscoe Park’s photographs, collected for the first time in this book, intend to mystify. The particular process of discovery and documentation practised by Briscoe is coupled with his use of light to disrupt the intimacy between himself, as observer, and the sanctity of a moment that would have otherwise passed unseen. The benign and inquisitive eyes of Scottish sheep turn demonic and uncanny – responding to a camera flash in the darkness – and the windows of a derelict chapel emit an intense red glare as though barely containing what is harboured within. Collecting locations ranging from the beautiful, rugged terrain of Dartmoor, England, to the expansive vistas of the Pacific Northwest – Briscoe likens his craft to ‘map building’. This working method is the link that ties each of these scenes into the same imagined place. As on Earth, the same moon that illuminates certain scenes appears in others – uniting them in a silvery unveiling of space and time and revealing a path between previously disparate areas. In a similar way, people punctuate the landscapes in Arcana like full stops, their existence within the frame marking the instant they were reborn as a character in Briscoe’s world – both permanent and impermanent. A secret society forms, its members both perceivers and the perceived, existing in the plane between the ethereal scenes depicted in Arcana and those who view them." Make Us Whole — The History of Dead Space Cult Classics — 001 published by @lostincult Recently back from print, the first instalment in Lost In Cult’s new imprint, Cult Classics. Cult Classics is dedicated to text-focused book projects that span fiction and nonfiction alike. "For 16 years, survival horror has been gripped by the events which unfolded upon the USG Ishimura — the derelict setting of EA Redwood Shores’ iconic Dead Space. From its first entry to its transcendent remake, the sprawling universe of Dead Space has captivated players and raised the bar for its genre more than once, becoming a transmedia franchise in the process. But the series has also stumbled; taken wrong turns. In Make Us Whole: The History of Dead Space, author Elijah Beahm explores the vast reaches of the Dead Space universe, cataloguing every masterpiece, misstep, and oddity across the series from its video games and movies to its novels and comics. Make Us Whole: The History of Dead Space is the definitive, comprehensive book encapsulating every Dead Space project. Its 272 pages feature incisive prose, new and candid interviews with the franchise’s creators, and hands-on insight into pre-release game prototypes."
