The Palladium opened in 1985 in a space on East 14th Street—somewhere between uptown chic and downtown sleaze—that had first been built in 1927 and had operated as a movie theatre and concert venue before being converted into a nightclub by Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager. The duo, recently released from prison for tax evasion following the collapse of their previous nightclub, Studio 54, hired Japanese architect Arata Isozaki to design the building’s interiors and it can be argued that, with the Palladium, Isozaki built the first post-modern discotheque. Isozaki kept the decaying Baroque interior of the old venue almost intact, building a Metabolist-influenced structure of geometric lines inside the shell of the old concert venue. The main space was covered in a system of lights and video screens that pushed the technology of the nightclub into the future, with two banks of video monitors, that could be hydraulically lifted from floor to ceiling, as a centerpiece. The Palladium put the emphasis as much on the VJ as on the DJ, on the image as on the sound. As well as Isozaki, Rubell, and Schrager underscored this idea of the nightclub as a visual space by hiring a group of artists to design the interior through a system of murals and displays, giving each area of the Palladium a distinct ambiance. Francesco Clemente, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Julian Schnabel, Kenny Scharf, and Keith Haring all collaborated with Isozaki across the seven floors of the venue, with a giant Haring mural of writhing, dancing cartoon bodies taking pride of place across the back of the dancefloor. The Palladium proposed not so much a new kind of nightclub but the nightclub pushed to the extreme: the body under the influence of extreme and constant stimulation, technological and artistic input, light, sound, and desire. In this, the Palladium, and Isozaki’s architecture within an architecture, play up the nightclub as a site of temporary creation, a space totally defined by its nightly overrunning with people in search of moments of freedom and ecstasy, a monolithic construction built every evening at sundown and gone in the morning when the music stops. @stoneisland NO SEASONS at Capsule Plaza 2026, Milan. Taking forward an original project by Massimo Osti, first introduced in 1989 until 1994, the NO SEASONS capsule draws from Stone Island’s timelessness by shaping new outerwear archetypes. A single style is realized in six iconic fabrications: Tela Resinata, Nylon Prismatico-TC, Raso Gommato, David-TC, Crinkle Reps NY, and Panno—all dyed in piombo colour. The installation, designed by @nm3.xyz , is defined by a suspended technological ceiling, projecting a site-specific film by @700x100dotcom and @behind.products . Exhibited elements are developed through NM3’s dry-assembly approach, combining laser cutting and bending—including four custom seating structures, upholstered in the Stone Island NO SEASONS fabrics. Sound is delivered through the @friendly.pressure Studio One system. Featuring a special performance by @jamesblake . Photography by @beppemiotto
