Carson Elementary School - featured in the March 2026 issue of Award Magazine
Located in Quesnel, BC, comes this modern K–7 replacement school that is being built along the Quesnel River to replace the existing school after a 2021 landslide. Station One Architects designed this 3,800 m² building to accommodate 390 students—twice the capacity of the original 195-student school. The new campus features an open learning commons, flexible classroom pods, a bigger gymnasium, and a Neighbourhood Learning Centre that includes childcare services for local families. To handle unstable soil, we used a pile foundation, and the building is designed to cut greenhouse gas emissions by half while being ready for future solar panel installation.

Kwantlen Polytechnic University Métis Nation Government of BC Childcare & Early Childhood Education Training Centre in Surrey– Construction Progress
Mass timber taking shape at KPU’s Childcare & Early Childhood Education Training Centre in Surrey.
The structure is now well underway, with the glulam beam-and-column system and timber roof framing clearly defining the building form. The exposed wood structure will serve both a structural and architectural role, creating warm, natural learning environments.
Developed in partnership with Métis Nation BC, the project reflects a shared commitment to community-focused, culturally grounded spaces.
Highlights at this stage:
• Clean, efficient glulam framing and connections
• Expressed roof structure with strong daylighting
• Deep overhangs supporting passive design
• Courtyard form beginning to emerge

At Bush, Bohlman & Partners, we make sustainability integral from the start. Structural systems can account for up to 80% of a building’s embodied carbon footprint, and our collaborative approach focuses on reducing that impact while contributing positively to the environment through regenerative design.
By analyzing comparative structural systems, incorporating mass timber, and specifying high-performance concrete mixes with recycled content. We work closely with project teams to meet sustainability targets such as LEED Gold, Passive House, and Net Zero.
We are actively engaging with climate action through the SE 2050 Program, working toward a future where structural engineers better understand, reduce, and ultimately strive to eliminate embodied carbon by 2050.

Construction is now underway on the Tamanawis Secondary addition. We are excited to be part of this project. 🚧📐
This 3-storey addition will increase the capacity of the school by 575 students. It will feature a theatre, small gymnasium, science rooms, foods room, and art studio among other educational spaces. Integrated into the addition is a 37-capacity childcare with an Infant/Toddler program and a 2.5-to-5-year program. The original school was designed by DA in the early 90s and so the exterior architectural design strongly relates to the existing school to create a unified expression for the overall building.

Richmond Hospital CT Replacement and Modular Addition
This project involves a 315 m² addition and a 105 m² interior renovation that expanded and modernized the existing facility. The addition combines conventional steel framing with prefabricated modular CT building to achieve both durability and efficiency in delivery. The design addresses the complexity of tying a new building into the older structure, necessitating detailed planning for structural connections, envelope integration, and mechanical and electrical continuity.
The result will be a high-performance facility addition that blends new technology and modern construction methods with the existing infrastructure.
