I almost didn’t post this. These are the perspectives that don’t usually get shared. Grateful to share this one. Horace Mann Middle School—wall to court. Honored to work with Branded Arts, Horace Mann, and the Skyhook Foundation. It’s all for the Kids. Public art like this is still one of my favorite things to do—especially in unique spaces like this one. »Painting a piece of #mural #art on the walls of a school is the next best thing to being a teacher. To me it is. And having this big of a presence in students’ everyday lives is a very privileged position. I feel like I owe it to the future generations who my work will subconsciously be talking to, that I leave the place with an energy of respect, love, dignity. I respect the place, its history and purpose; I apply every brush stroke with love for my craft; I try to give my creations facial expressions as dignified as possible. Gentle strength is what I’m trying for. And this time, at Mann UCLA Community School in South L.A., my job was made easy, as their new mascot is the panther, a symbol of physical prowess, and their old school mascot was the owl, symbol of wisdom. Along with words by Horace Mann, educator and namesake of the 100-year-old school, my thoughts and lines became part of the @brandedarts mural festival. I am so grateful to have been invited to school projects like these, which rejuvenate and locations for young kids and teenagers around the world. From empty blacktop to this. Wrapped a mural + full court at Horace Mann UCLA Community School as part of a festival with @brandedarts Originally brought in to transform the gym exterior—wall and court. Started building the mural with my usual language—layered signage, collage, pulling in the school’s name and past + present mascots to give it something the students could connect to, especially during their centennial year. Then the project opened up. We got word the @skyhookfoundation wanted to get involved and the court could be dedicated to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. @kareemabduljabbar_33 Easy decision—whatever makes the most impact for the kids. We integrated the foundation at center court, Kareem came through, shared words with the students, donated jerseys, and helped open the space. -It was pretty incredible. For the court itself, I went the opposite direction of the wall— no narrative, no subject. Just color, pattern, movement. Something open. Something fun to play on. Full circle moment seeing the kids step onto it and immediately make it theirs. Grateful to everyone who helped bring this to life. Here’s my completed mural at @mannuclacs in Los Angeles! The school’s mascot is a panther so obviously I painted some panthers along with a student with a panther head. Scroll through to see the kid who modeled; he’ll be walking through the lunch area long after he graduates. The art that I was exposed to when I was a kid in public school had a big impact on my creativity and I was thrilled to have this opportunity to pass that on to a new generation. This was part of @brandedarts ’ long running project bringing a huge range of artists to paint murals at public schools across Los Angeles. I was honored to have been invited into this vibrant community to paint a wall. All the students, faculty, and staff I met were very welcoming and super enthusiastic about the project and I hope this painting brightens their day every time they have lunch next to it. Shoutout to @594evah and @josheverhorn for showing me the ropes of mural painting and to @brandedarts for giving me the chance to paint my first ever large scale mural.

@travmsk just finished his latest mural with @brandedarts for Horace Mann’s centennial celebration 🏀 For his first basketball court project, he made the vision even bigger by bringing the artwork onto the backboard, hoop, and net. It’s my new favorite.

Working on-site, artists will engage directly with students through workshops, conversations, and hands-on participation, turning the campus into an active site of creative exchange. • The Grand Reception, which culminates the week of programming, will be held Friday, April 10th from 3:30pm to 6pm.
