We are excited to announce that UCLA Ed&Is Professor-in-Residence Maryanne Wolf’s book, “Reader, Come Home: The Reading Brain in a Digital World,” has been selected as the 2026 Princeton Pre-Read! “Reader, Come Home” explores the future of the reading brain and examines how our capacity for critical thinking, empathy, and reflection is evolving in an increasingly digital world. Established in 2013 by Christopher L. Eisgruber, the Princeton Pre-Read introduces incoming undergraduate students to intellectual life at Princeton University. Each year, members of the incoming class read and engage with a selected book prior to arriving on campus. During Orientation Week and throughout the academic year, students participate in discussions with peers, student leaders, and President Eisgruber. We celebrate our Ed&Is faculty whose work continues to shape critical inquiry on campuses and across communities worldwide. #UCLAEdIS #UCLA

Celebrating 100 Years 🎉🌟 Part of Mann UCLA’s 100th Anniversary Celebration included the dedication of a basketball court to Lakers legend Kareem Abdul Jabbar and his Skyhook Foundation. The mission of the foundation is to provide outdoor STEAM education to marginalized youth. “Education is the real skyhook – it lifts young people beyond what they ever thought was possible,” Abdul-Jabbar said. “At Skyhook, we’re giving kids a shot at their future, one that can’t be blocked.” #UCLAEdIS #MannCentennial #UCLACommunitySchool

Happy Earth Day! 🌎 Chris Jadallah, Assistant Professor of Environmental Justice in Education, explores how young people and communities engage in land- and community-based learning. While he values scientific and technical expertise in addressing environmental challenges, he also emphasizes the importance of the knowledge and ideas of local community members. His perspective is shaped by his background as an ecologist and his ongoing work with Black Thumb Farm in the San Fernando Valley, where youth are empowered to connect with nature and advocate for a sustainable future. Today and every day, UCLA ED&IS celebrates educators like Jadallah who are committed to environmental justice and a more sustainable world.

100 years of community, creativity, and connection! 💙💛 On April 10th, we celebrated the centennial anniversary of Mann UCLA Community School in a big way. The campus came alive with the unveiling of a stunning new series of murals across campus, community-building events, delicious food, and alumni of the school from the South Los Angeles community. A program highlighting the resilience of Mann UCLA and the bright future ahead featured remarks from Darnell Hunt, UCLA Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost and Tina Christie, Dean of UCLA’s School of Education and Information Studies. Here’s to 100 years and many more to come 🎉

More than 61,000 students in Los Angeles County experienced homelessness in the 2023–24 school year—a 28% increase. New research briefs from UCLA CTS examine this growing crisis through interviews with district and county staff, combined with district-level and statewide data. “Hidden in Plain Sight” highlights how stigma, fear, and fragmented systems make it difficult to identify and support students. “Rising Numbers, Fading Resources” shows homelessness rising as resources decline. The research sheds light on who is most impacted, with disproportionate effects on Black students, Latine students, and English Learners, as well as challenges like chronic absenteeism and growing disparities across districts. The findings point to urgent needs: stronger coordination, improved data, and sustained, equity-centered support. Read both briefs at @transformschoolsucla link in bio. #StudentHomelessness #EducationEquity #VoicesFromTheField #K12Education #HousingInsecurity #EducationResearch #EquityInEducation #California

Dean Christina Christie and Lynn Kim-John, Executive Director of Center X, have written a commentary in EdSource highlighting the ingenuity of educators amid federal funding cuts. At UCLA Ed&IS, K–12 teaching programs at Center X are expanding their mission through partnerships with California Community Colleges—supporting over 2 million students, many first-generation and from historically underserved communities. Through collaborations with Pasadena City College and others, UCLA students and faculty are working alongside community college partners to elevate student voices and drive meaningful change on campus.
