In his research-based practice, Jonah Hoffman exposes the colonial exploitation embedded within paintingâs materiality. His current work investigates the history of Cobalt Blue and its entanglements with geopolitical power, energy systems and global art economies. Through layers of printed and painted imagery rendered entirely in cobalt blue, he reinterprets the visual culture surrounding cobalt production and personal technology, confronting the hidden violence embedded within these systems.
By examining systemic injustices in an era of ecological collapse, Hoffmanâs work transforms complex histories into reflections on the interconnected roles of materials, states and individuals, while critically examining the artistâs own position within these structures.
Born in New Mexico, USA, Jonah Hoffman holds an MFA from Goldsmiths, University of London (2025) and a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2020). He has exhibited in London, Chicago and Santa Fe.

Who would have guessed this rich chocolate-coloured timber with its pale contrasting sapwood comes from the laburnum tree?
As green wood dries, small cracks can appear as the timber moves and settles. For this vase, I filled them with a copper powder mixture â not to hide them, but to highlight the movement and processes at work within the wood.
I love how the copper catches the ligh, almost like traces left behind by the drying process itself.
Follow along as this new collection develops from freshly cut timber into finished forms shaped by nature, movement and time.

Millions of litres of oil spilled into our oceans. The solution? Hair from salon floors.
One kilogram of human hair absorbs up to eight litres of oil. A discovery made by a hairdresser in 1989.
Nature really does have all the answers.
Did you know this? đđ

Sometimes the most interesting pieces come from the parts that might otherwise be discarded.
This small dish was made from the outer edge of the same log used for the bowl I showed a couple of days ago, keeping the natural bark edge intact as a reminder of where it came from. A direct connection back to the tree â and a way of making full use of the material.

Most people have never heard of Green Salon Collective. But they should.
The hairdressing industry creates enough waste to fill 50 football stadiums every year. Around 99% of hair cuttings end up in landfill, even though hair is actually a resource.
When hair decomposes in landfill it produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas. But it doesnât have to end that way. Hair can be composted, used in agriculture, even made into booms that absorb oil spills.
Green Salon Collective works with salons across the UK to make sure none of that waste goes to landfill. Foils, colour tubes, hair clippings, all diverted and repurposed. Since 2020 theyâve diverted over 225 tonnes of waste from landfill.
Real, practical change. Not just a marketing buzzword.

@doucelinevc and I have been putting posters across #Peckham for the exhibition #Un-Earthing - this is the notice board at @camberwellual it was very surreal, last time I stepped into the building I was 20 years old.
Please come along to the @ual_thehub 16-17 May, open 9pm - 6pm @artistsopenhse - it's going to be great!
This is the moment I love most.
Turning the bowl while the wood is still wet allows me to go incredibly thin â so thin it becomes translucent.
Using light behind the form helps me read the wall thickness and keep it even, but also reveals something else â the life inside the wood.
At this stage, Iâm not forcing a final shape. Iâm setting it up so that as it dries, it can move, distort and find its own form.
Follow along to see how it changes over time.

Before the lathe, thereâs a decision to make.
This sycamore log is cut to create cross-grain bowl blanks â being aware of where the pith is to reduce splitting, but still keeping the natural movement that will come later.
Nothing here is random â but not everything is controlled either.
Follow along to see how these decisions shape the final pieces.

With my Shared Ground show drawing near, Iâm enjoying a weekend of glazing, adding details and curating a final selection.
As I write, the kiln is humming and clunking gently in the background - always a favourite sound, full of optimism.
