Cousins… it has been an insanely exhausting April, and somehow it’s May now :’)
I’m so excited to bring in more spring-inspired dishes and more Viet street food energy. Lately I’ve been deep in homestyle soups and stews, but tomorrow we’re switching it up.
We’re doing coconut lemongrass snails with crunchy baguette , the kind of dish that makes you slow down, tear bread, dip, scoop, and just enjoy food the way we do in Vietnam. Don't be scared , I feel like if you like crayfish you will like this.
Also… I truly think these kick mussels’ ass. Is that a hot take? Idk. I stand 10 toes downnnnn.
And dessert is going to be a stupid fun sticky rice + sago semifreddo situation.
Sorry this menu is a little late, but I hope you love it because it’s going to be dopeeeeee
C U SOON, love you, feed you tomorrow,
@yourcousinbi

Hey Cousins, It's been a year with some change since I moved to Seattle, so let me introduce myself.
✨️
My name is Lisa; some people call me Bi or cousin. I often call everyone cousin because anyone who has shared, liked, followed anything on this page or has eaten any of my food is, in fact, a cousin.
✨️
A little on my background. I used to work in the service industry about a decade ago but left due to the toxic environment. So what did I do? I jumped into another crazy environment: emergency medicine. I worked as an EMT, then advanced to become a paramedic at a fire station.
✨️
When the pandemic happened, I started to notice relatively healthy people die suddenly, which made me realize that I should try to reconnect with my family despite our differences. And so I reconnected with my family. But I realized speaking to them isn't enough; the only language they would understand is food. I began to cook Vietnamese food to get closer to my family and understand my parents more. In doing so, I noticed that many people may not have access to this comfort food; whether losing or having to distance themselves away from the family, they lose this type of food. Because often, the food in Vietnamese restaurants makes them more palatable or popular items and ignore a bunch of delicious regional dishes that may be a bit funkier or dishes that may need some guidance to truly enjoy. Not only that, I wanted to showcase the array of Viet food besides Pho and Banh mi.
✨️
I hope to have a restaurant/ bakery/ deli that has a hybrid of Viet comfort food and Vietnamese American pastries. But till then, you all can catch me cooking a storm at Sophon, teaching online cooking classes at Homemade , or running around town feeding all y'all at pop-ups. I just want to say thank you so much for all of you that I have spent any second with, whether in person or online. I am so grateful to be able to make the transition of making happy food memories rather than being in people's worst memories in life.
✨️ Thank you all for being kind, loving, and open to me feeding y'all. Here's to adding PNW cousins to the fam and making more room at the table.
Feed ya soon Love ya , @yourcousinbi
Recently I was interviewed by the lovely @jackievarriano about my perspective on Vietnamese food for this guide in the @seattletimes so grateful for @tanvinhseattle for even mentioning me.
I had to reflect on what this meant to me. Some may look at it as success, some may look at it as recognition. But I like to look at it as a beautiful road that many others have paved for me to even speak about the importance and dynamics Vietnamese food.
I look at it thinking about how proud my parents were to assimilate and make themselves smaller and accommodating to the American culture . I can't imagine what they went through and how it felt to hide some of your culture and make yourself smaller for others to be comfortable and so you don't stand out as a target. But because they did that.. I want to live in a different way in a sense for them... and for me. The way I cook and feed others is loud and proud. I resent any sense to make myself smaller for anyone. To make items that people tell me that are valuable and worth making vs what is valuable to the culture.
Looking at other Vietnamese people live true to who they are and push the boundaries of what Vietnamese food and drinks look like is exciting. I am so so grateful for the OGs and the industry disruptors out there and I can't wait for what's to come.
Thank you for setting the bar high! @eatdrinkmonsoon@eric.banh@sophie.banh@mcozycafe.seattle@quynh.seattle@yenvious@phobacseattle@basarestaurant@ramieseattle@voicapheseattle@anchoviesandsalt@sago.kitchen@omsom@nguyencoffeesupply
I hope everyone takes a moment to grab a bite at these establishments or buy a product to open your world to what Vietnamese food is and can be.
If you wanna cry or get sentimental I wrote more about my feelings of my family and Vietnamese food in my blog in my bio.
Thank you so so much for all of your support, each and everyone on you that I've encountered either online or in person are my cousins for real.
Anyways love ya feed ya soon,
Love @yourcousinbi 🫂
