Hoàng Bá Việt, my great-grandfather, was a true visionary and entrepreneur. Our family’s deep-rooted connection to coffee and spirits began with him.
Born into a humble farming family in Thai Binh, he excelled in academics and obtained a scholarship to study in Paris. Upon returning to Vietnam, he leveraged his connections with the French to become the first distributor of wine and spirits in Thai Binh, securing exclusive alcohol rights for the province.
With the profits from his business, he acquired land in Sơn Tây, becoming the first landowner in the region. There, he cultivated pineapples, tea, and robusta coffee beans while constructing the only water source in front of his plantation, supporting both his crops and the local community.
In 1954, when the Vietnamese Communist Party seized our family’s land, my grandmother fled to Saigon with my father and 6 other children, sustaining the family by curating and selling medicinal remedies.
To this day, the land in Sơn Tây is still known as
“đất của Hoàng Bá Việt - the land of Hoang Ba Viet.”
1. Dragonfruit growing on the family’s old lands

3. Dad with the current house owner. She cute!
4. The infamous well that sustained the whole village
5. Glamour shot at the original house
6. My great grandfather’s tombstone. Crazy fact. His only son is buried next to him. He died young with 4 surviving sisters. Surreal. @khoawuzhere
