Designed and built by 14-18 year olds during three STORE Summer Schools, the STORE STORE Pavilion uses locally reclaimed and fallen timber to create a community space. During London Design Festival 2024, the pavilion welcomed the public to gather and participate in a series of workshops. STORE STORE Pavilion is part of a wider project, STORE BUILD, which is exploring the transformation of a garage site into education and workshop space. This build project is implementing a radical process of applied learning and participatory design with young people from the local community. B-made supported with tours of the workshops and processes and the use of the CNC cutting machines. ‘Cabin Fever’ Summer School with Flimsy Works focused on the design and build of an urban log cabin to form the walls of the STORE Pavilion. Students learnt how to work with timber by hand and with machines, using glue-free techniques to make an innovative, stackable and de-stackable structure out of reclaimed material. Students designed and built a roof for STORE STORE Pavilion which can be fully disassembled and reassembled, using hand tools and Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machines. B-made supported with tours of the workshops and processes and the use of the CNC cutting machines. During ‘Open Doors’ Summer School, students were guided by designers and architects Theo Tan and Matt Lucraft to design and build two thresholds for the STORE STORE Pavilion. Structural Engineer Manja van de Worp and Mat Barnes (CAN) and Matt Gabe lead ‘Raising Roofs’ Summer School.

There are four fundamental forces in the known universe; gravity, electromagnetism, and the strong and weak nuclear forces. Could consciousness be the fifth force that combines them? This is the question posed by a new installation at the Barcelona Pavilion @fundaciomies open from 25 October until 03 November. Through a series of experiments, artists, musicians, scientists, architects and engineers will explore the obstacles to a global transition to sustainable energy, and seek a greater awareness of the power in design to regenerate. In(Visible) Energy is an omni-disciplinary experimental installation, fabricated at The Bartlett's @B__made workshop at Here East. It was created by @josep_mias , @lukeolsenarchitect , @graemewilliamsonarchitects , Melis van den Berg, Hamish Vietch, @christopher.leung2000 , Martha Stevens, @izzywats0n and Orlando George-Ibyote, working under the umbrella of our Engineering & Architecture Design MEng programme (taught jointly by @bartlettarchucl , @cege_ucl , and the UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering), and in collaboration with visual artist @leon.chew and sound artist Sandy Davis. “Studio DERA has started construction on an innovative ‘insulated earth’ community facility on allotments in Mitcham, south London” @architectsjournal (click the link in our bio to read more) The design is for an outdoor, unheated space that is divided into two masses with overlaying roofs, separating the classroom and toilet with a covered courtyard in-between. Informed by both its green space context and the needs of its multi-age users, the building will be led by sustainable design principles, utilising thermal mass and orientation to make it habitable during the allotment seasons. With collaboration from james.green.uk and @tom_day_vees from the Bartlett Manufacturing and Design Exchange @b__made , and the CobBauge Project @cobbauge @plymuni , the building will be constructed with naturally sourced materials, including CobBauge walls (insulated rammed earth) and timber. Location: Mitcham, Merton Local authority: The London Borough of Merton Type of project: New Build Allotment Client: Hadley Road Community Allotment CIC Architect: @studiodera_ Structural engineer: @priceandmyers , @barryhoneysett.engineers Funding/sponsorship: @moathomes , Beddington, @secfoundation , Merton Civic Pride Fund @merton_council , The National Lottery Fund, @southernhousinguk , local fundraising, Speedy Hire Croydon @speedyhire , @hubworkshop , @b__made Special thanks: Matthew Fox @foxecoarc coarc and Steve Goodhew Start on site: April 2024 Completion: October 2024 Gross internal floor area: 28m² Image credits: 1. Catch the B-made research projects exhibition in @bartlettkiosk while it lasts! The exhibition showcases Melis van den Berg’s research on sand casting hollow aluminium pebbles. In combining photogrammetry, CNC machining and aluminium casting methods, Melis created a repeatable way of fabricating replicas of a pebble from the Barcelona Pavilion. @bartlettarchucl staff and students, want to learn more? Book a process tutorial with Melis via the B-made moodle page. #bmade #bartlett #ucl #workshopwindow #cnc #aluminium #manufacturing #design #exchange
