A pleasure to be asked to contribute to the latest issue of the always special Road Rat magazine.
Lighting concept: it's 1995 and I'm shooting this car at night in a car park on the edge of an industrial zone, the background is lit by high-pressure sodium vapour street lighting, it's a haze of deep yellows and heavy shadows, while specular highlights in the metallic purple bodywork puncture the image.
The lighting operates as a condition rather than an effect - more on that in the next post.

Hyundai press team were kind enough send out a pallet of components to the studio for this shoot. Coils, batteries, inverters, signal loops, AC compressors, all kinds of EV specific parts.

Singer DLS Turbo 'St Germain'
In preproduction we spoke about doing something that referenced late afternoon Californian desert light, one of my first thoughts was the graduated skies in Ed Ruscha's paintings, oranges, pinks and petrol blues, big nuclear skies.
This one was done fully in camera with minimal post production, the colour palette dialed into the key light with flash for fill-in.

Bugatti x The Road Rat. Edition 23, Spring 2026. Part1.
The Abspannwerk Buchhändlerhof was built in 1928 to power the city of Berlin, an E-Werk. My concept for this shoot was to use this industrial monument, under construction the year Lang's Metropolis was released, as a lightsource, its geometry reflecting across the carbon fibre and lacquered steel of these Bugatti motorcars.
