I know everyone is ooohing and ahhing about the Jackson Pollock at @christiesinc from the S.I. Newhouse collection but the Brancusi got my attention. Something about that single earring…. Executed circa 1913, Danaïde was inspired by a young Hungarian artist, Margit Pogany, whom Brancusi had met in Paris in 1910. The artist was deeply taken by her, absorbing her small face, wide almond-shaped eyes, and dark hair, which she wore in the same neat chignon as can be seen in the present work, before distilling her features into his own distinct sculptural idiom in both Danaïde, as well as the Mademoiselle Pogany series. This is the last of 6 iterations and the only gilt version in private hands. It’s been guaranteed…. CONSTANTIN BRANCUSI (1876-1957)

Christopher Bucklow

The Field of the Gold Cloth, 2012
Cibachrome print
Anonymous gift
The work also allows us to expand our representation of the many photography techniques in our holdings. For this photograph, Bucklow uses a box-like camera he made himself to make this image. He places a sheet of light-sensitive paper at the bottom of the camera, then he places a sheet of aluminum foil that has been perforated with the pattern seen here. He then wheels his camera outdoors and exposes the sheet to sunlight to create the photograph. Each point of light is in fact an image of the sun’s disc. That’s a field of images of the sun itself that the viewer is looking at. As he has described, “The process is incredibly analog. It’s sort of a miracle that you get a clean image.”

This was one fun and challenging installation of what the Manhattan clients call their “Reliquary Room”. They have many different collections and this on was room focused on their Italian antiques and reliquaries. The most art we’ve ever hung in one room! #Reliquary #reliquary #antiquesandcollectibles #italianantiques #artinstall
