One week from today, Roberto Lugo’s “Alfarero del Barrio (Village Potter)" opens in Madison Square Park! If you walked through the park today, you might have noticed our teams hard at work installing these vibrant and monumental pieces on Redbud and Sparrow Lawns. (And in case you were wondering, the artist tagged the fire hydrant!) Join us next Wednesday, May 20, on Redbud Lawn from 5 - 6:30 PM for remarks by the artist and a live musical performance. Free and open to all, you can read more about the event and this latest public exhibition on our website.

They're NYC's climate data... knitted by hand. Come by the Arts Center for Open Studios this Saturday, May 16, and catch opening day of the Tempestry Project's installation! The Tempestry Project (@tempestryproject ) is coming to the Arts Center! Created by a community of volunteer knitters, the project features sixteen hand-knitted panels or “tempestries,” each depicting a full year of the city’s daily temperature data rendered into various colors. This is New York City’s first Tempestry Collection, part of the nationwide Tempestry Project, a collaborative fiber arts offering a unique, hands-on perspective on environmental change. Presented in partnership with Madison Square Park Conservancy (@madsqparknyc ) at LMCC's Arts Center at @governorsisland .

Our annual MSPC Park Supporter Party was a huge success! Shout-out to Shake Shack for sponsoring the event, as well as supporting MSPC year-round. It was great to reconnect with our members and supporters. Thank you for your generous support that helps us keep the park green and sparking year-round. We are so grateful you could join us; and if you couldn’t make it, we hope to see you soon in the park. 🎉☀️🍔 Photography by Kevin Yan

Did you know? Bike riding is prohibited in Madison Square Park to ensure a safe environment for pedestrians. In recent years, we have seen an increase in cyclists in the park as demand for delivery services and transportation alternatives have increased. In 2023, MSPC introduced Park Ambassadors who actively address these concerns by engaging with those who violate this rule, whether knowingly or unknowingly. Additionally, signage is posted informing visitors throughout the park. Thank you for complying and stay safe! 🚲

It’s almost the dog days of summer! As the weather changes, our dog run hours change too. We’re back to our summer hours, with fifteen-minute closures at 11 AM and 7 PM for cleaning. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we keep the dog run safe for humans and pups alike. 🐶

Since 2004, Madison Square Park Conservancy has commissioned outdoor work by dynamic artists for all to view in public space. Our next exhibition, “Alfarero del Barrio (Village Potter),” by artist Roberto Lugo, will open on Wednesday May 20 at 5 PM. Lugo will present two sculptures made from hand-painted milled foam, a twenty-foot-high urn recalling traditional ceramics and a fifteen-foot-high fire hydrant, in honor of the urban environment. The event will feature remarks by the MSPC team and a live musical performance. No registration is required to attend, but you can click the link in our bio to RSVP for event updates online. In honor of Earth Month, I’ve been reflecting on Gardens of Renewal at @madsqparknyc , a project from last year that still feels very alive to me. Across both installations, we planted over 3,000 native plants. Each one chosen not just for beauty, but for its role in restoring relationship—between soil, water, insects, and time.🪾🌳 Native plants carry deep ecological memory, evolving in place over thousands of years and helping rebuild the integrity of entire ecosystems. Echinacea and bee balm offer vital nectar for pollinators. Little bluestem and switchgrass are quietly doing the work below ground—building soil structure, increasing water retention, and creating resilience where it matters most. Milkweed holds space for monarchs to complete their life cycle, while black-eyed Susans extend nourishment across seasons. And there are other quieter stories embedded in the garden—plants like ironweed and queen of the prairie rising in late summer to feed pollinators when little else is in bloom, while species like jewelweed have long been used to soothe skin and repair irritation, reminding us that these landscapes have always been both ecological and medicinal. Even the more unexpected species—like pitcher plants—participate in balancing ecosystems in their own way, interacting with insects and nutrient cycles in environments where soil alone is not enough. These gardens are not static—they’re living systems. Designed to regenerate, to support biodiversity, and to remind us that beauty and function are never separate in nature. There’s something grounding about being reminded that these systems already know what to do. Forever grateful for the universe we live in.🤍

Imagine if tonight's Knicks game was right next to the park! From 1879 until 1925, Madison Square Garden was located on the northeast corner of the park. While MSG has since moved uptown, its spirit lives on - our staff occasionally get calls asking about the Bruce Springsteen concert. Join us on our next history tour on May 26 to learn more about the stories surrounding the park. Click the link in our bio to register today!
